My 5yr old is still bed wetting and weeing herself through the day even tho she can go to.the toilet, I'm forever washing bedding and underwear, some days she comes home from school and she stinks of wee, I've tried everything and sometimes she says she didn't know it happened so she's been referred to see a peadetrician, anyone else know what could be wrong

I had this issue with my son and got enormous help from my local public health nurse. I live in Ireland so I think the equivalent is your health visitor. anyhow the first thing we did was keep a record of what was happening. thst meant keeping a chart of fluids in and fluids out and how many wets he had. my son was 9 at the time so he kept this record himself which made him part of the solution if you see what I mean . He would have been wet every day and every night at this stage and we had ruled out any physical cause.

Because my son had this problem I was always inclined to get him to wee often to try and stop him being wet but this was not the thing to do according to the nurse. She said that he needed to learn how a full bladder felt and how to hold on -hope that makes sense. She had him drink about two litres of water across the day and he gradually learned over the course of a couple of months to hold for longer and what it felt like for his bladder to be full. We just tried to solve the days first to be honest. The nights we put pull ups on and just expected him to be wet. I never said anything about the night wetting at all and the nurse said they would resolve themselves as the day time was sorted. She was right -it was the best thing we ever did for him.

the nights gradually became drier and the daytime got less and less wet until he was completly dry.

he is a different child. happy, confident and more social in a way he never was before.

pm me if you want to ask me anything else, I'm more than happy to help if I can.

Tried a bedwetting alarm?
My daughter stopped wetting the bed in about 9 weeks. She used the Chummie bedwetting alarm - www.chummie.com
It worked for her and should help your child too...

Good luck!

I think you need to tackle the daytime first, lots of children are still wet at night at this age. Make sure she is drinking plenty, that is so important, at least 6-8 cups through the day, and she needs to be encouraged when she goes for a wee to sit there for a long enough time that she has definately finished, lots of kids dont empty bladders properly as want to go back to what they were doing!Cut out fizzy or caffeinated drinks and any red/purple squashes like Ribena.Has the doctor had a urine sample to check for a UTI?

bed wetting at night isn't as issue art this age, just use pull ups. They are normally at least 7 years before they will even look at it medically. My six year old and several in her class still wear pullups during the night.

It's the daytime issue you need to address, if she's been refured I take it she's been check for any simple issues like UTI. sometimes it's because they aren't drinking enough and don't ever feel full, so drinking more can help.
