Squinting / screwing face up

dd who is 16 months has recently started screwing her face up, looks a bit like she is squinting at the sun. I thought at first it may be her hair in her eyes but she does it even when it is tied up.

Could it be linked to teething, not that I think she is at the mo?

Or could it be her eyesight maybe is poor?

My ds does this but only when I've told him not to do something. Think he works on the theory that if he closes his eyes and can't see me, I then can not see what he is doing. But as he can't see what he is doing with his eyes shut, it turns into a sort of screwed up squint! Could this be what your dd is doing or is it in normal situations she will squint?

Don't think so northener. My mum says she may be copying me as my eyes crinkle when I do exagerated smiles at dd when I praise her for things.

I am worried as my mum has a squint/lazy eye and I was taken in to be looked at as a child as well.

She just seems to be doing it all the time when playing or whatever.

dh is more worried than me so I said I would ask the wise mumsnetters for advise.

Ds1 does funny eyes a lot- for him its a visual stim - in other words he enjoys the effect of whatever it is he sees when he does it. Ds2 does funny eyes as well- but he's copying ds1.

She may just think it makes things look interesting.

Hmmmm, its a mystery why they do things isn't it? Think I will monitor for now and then maybe get her looked at, especially with our wonky eye family history.

OO - my daughter has a squint and lazy eye but it was not noticeable when she was little and she didn't screw her face up (I think). Only became apparent when she started wearing glasses and only then when she took them off.

How bizarre, oliveoil, my dd who is almost 17 months now has also been doing this since 16 months! When was yours born? Mine was 10 October. dp finds it more worrying than I do, I think it's just another of those weird little experimental things they do. Actually I find it quite cute. I used to do something similar myself as a little one and I stopped when someone mimicked me doing it at school.

Dd was born on Oct 23 02, due Oct 14 though, she wasn't budging for anyone. Good job really as we moved into our new house on the 19th of Oct and I kept rubbing my tum saying stay in stay in stay in.

our 2 year old ds does this - very sweet - I think he likes the different vision it gives him! In the same way he's started folding his ears over - so that things sound different! I'm sure it's just an experimenting with different sounds/sights thing - makes me laugh..!
