ds only saying 3 words at 21 months

I'm concerned as my ds will only say hiya, mumma and yea, He points and grunts a lot. He is 21 months old, both my other 2 children had a good vocabulary at his age.
I thought we would take him to see the hv after Christmas if he doesn't improve.
Has anyone got any experience of this?

My DS2 was similar. Like you my older 2 had lots of words at this age so I was worried, but he's now 4 and is very chatty. He did have some speech therapy (got referred age 2.4) but tbh I don't think it made much difference. He just developed a bit later than the others.

Try not to worry too much. No harm mentioning it to your HV though.

Both of mine have been like this, my eldest is now 10 and is in the top sets in everything at school so I do believe some dc just develop later than others.

Ds is 18 months and isn't interested in talking whatsoever. He points and grunts a lot!

I'd ask for a hearing test. Ds was slow to speak and it turned out he had glue ear. Wish I'd ignored all the "Einstein didn't talk til 4" brigade tbh!

I get what Shoewhore is saying, but I think it comes done to listening to your instinct. Does he appear to understand when you talk to him? My Ds said his first word at bang on 21 months - 'dar' when he saw a star on the top of the Xmas tree! I think a few friends and family were concerned but I felt deep down that he was fine.He just likes to do things properly. He is now a very articulate 8 year -old, doing well at school etc. I wouldn't worry unless you actually are, if you see what I mean!

Thanks everyone, he does seem to understand what we are saying for example if I ask him put something in the bin, he will. The words he does say sound a bit nasaly as well iykwim.
He didn't sit unaided until almost 10 months but he was walking at 14 months. Ive been getting comments which have started to make me worry.
