Nightmares

Ds started having night terrors when he was around 2, he grew out of it apart from the odd on when he has a spate of nosebleeds, which occur often during the night.

He is 6 now and has been having nightmares for a few weeks. He wakes up terrified and screaming and he can tell us exactly what happened in the dream. He worries about having nightmares during the day and before bed which is exacerbating the problem.

I hate seeing him so scared and desperately want to help him. I've been saying "dreams aren't real and they can't hurt us." But to him the fear is real. I've tried distraction when he is thinking about it during the day but I don't know if I'm handling this in the right way. Does anyone have any experience of this?

Hi, my youngest went through the same until my sister in law bought her a dream catcher. It gave her immense confidence over going to bed the terrors soon were history and if they occurred were no longer frightening as she knew the catcher would keep her safe. I recommended it to a friend who's DS started having nightmares, it worked for him too.we still keep the dream catcher above the bed and haven't had any problems for years.
