19 month old headbanging

I'm worried about my 19 month old. When he doesn't get what he wants or something happens that he doesn't like, he will drop to the floor and either crash back and bang his head on the floor or he will go on all fours and start banging his head on the floor. It's very deliberate and happening more and more. I'm worried he's going to hurt himself.

I try to ignore it as much as possible or remove him and put him on the sofa so he won't hurt himself. Has anyone else had this? Can you let me know what you did or how long it lasted. Thanks :)

He's my 3rd dc so, as far as I can see, development is normal. Eye contact fine, he looks kisses and hugs, loves his animal book and can point to the animals when you ask etc It just seems to be his thing when he gets upset about something.

Thanks for the link. I'll take a look.

Apparently I used to do this. I'm fine eye tic ... dd2 used to do it too, it's amazing how she only did it once on the mastic floor, the carpet was a much better option after that! My granddaughter has also been known to do it when she's frustrated. I have read somewhere that toddlers can actually get a buzz from headbanging. I found this link, maybe it will help? www.drgreene.com/articles/head-banging/ I wouldn't be too concerned over it.

My 18 month old ds is doing exactly this. And whacking himself. My dd never did anything like this, it's very disconcerting. I'm assuming it's just a stage - hoping anyway.

ignore, ignore, ignore then :)

My son used to head bang, quite violently at times. I found it very distressing. He is 4 now and hardly ever does it now. He used to do it up to 20 times a day at his peak. I just wanted to say that it does get better.
