Not moving legs independently...

Might sounds like it's a silly one, but I thought I'd ask...

DD eleven months is not the quickest regarding motor skills. A quirk I've noticed is she always moves her legs together, for example if she's excited she pump them symetrically. If one goes to her mouth the other is by its side, if I move one the other follows. They only go assymetrical is I move them.

It's sounds odd but I'm wondering if it's why she doesn't crawl or cruise, as to do that you need to isolate. Remembering my others and lookig at photos from a young age they would bicycle their legs or independenetly lift their toes to suck on them,

Not heard of that before, but don't think there would be any harm in asking your go to check her over Smile

Actually, this was mentioned in our mummy and baby swimming class as being totally normal. At swimming, the leader has us move their legs in a kicking motion so that they get used to the legs not moving together. I'm no expert on this, but this makes me think that you really shouldn't worry at all. Also, it's not that strange not to crawl at 11 months.

Interesting Cat, my others moved them together mainly iyswim but also kicked in other ways. Also they were easily to move apart. DD goes stiff and fights this, she also fights her hands being brought together, if we play and try to clap her hands she holds them apart and arches her back. Her arms are freer though, they move ok, it's just the stiffness being brought together.

Does sound a tad unusual? maybe she just has tight muscles and a little bit of massage or physio would loosen her up

jellylegwobble · 10/11/2013 20:09

I wouldn't say her muscles are always tight and stiff, it's only in response to external pressure they seem to react like this. She moves them fine, she claps away to herself. You touch her arms and it would take more force that I'd use on a baby to move them, which is illogical as she's unusually weak (can't get off her back, pushing up on her front at 8/9 months, sitting at 9, still can't pull up etc, not much weight bearig of any kind).

Your DD sounds very much like my DS2. He rolled quite early, but didn't sit till 9 months, cannot get to sitting by himself. He's now 11 months and just starting to get on all fours and rock. He cannot move one leg at a time to crawl, and if left on his tummy he pumps all his limbs and laughs. It didn't occur to me it might not be normal.

jellylegwobble · 10/11/2013 20:47

It's hard to say what normal is I guess, I just see the difference from my other three.

I think that if you are concerned I'd take her to the gp or HV, and maybe get a specialist referral. Either to put your mind at ease, or to get any required management.
