My DS is just one and all the books and websites say he should have a couple of words beside mama dada, try to copy words, respond to his name and understand simple commands. DS has no words at all (although he does babble and make noises) and doesn't appear to understand anything we say. Otherwise he seems fine, motor skills coming on ok, and he does interact, play peekaboo and copy gestures etc. I think his hearing is ok as he responds to environmental sounds. Should I be at all worried? Is there possibly something we should be doing we're not? Bit worriedworried he doesn't get much attention during the day as I work full time while DH tries to work with him from home, not ideal I know.

I don't think my DS had any words at 12mo. By 18mo he had about 50 and you can't shut him up now! He's 19mo and says little phrases and lots of words.

I may be wrong, but I thought that they were supposed to have at least 3 or 4 words by 18 months, and if not go to GP. So you have a while before you need to worry.

I found this, which talks about the different ages and stages:

Just keep talking to him, reading him stories and singing nursery rhymes.

And I'd love to know how your DH gets any work done!

My DD didn't have any words at her first birthday either! She is 16mo now, and only just getting into the copying stage. She has around 60 words now though!

You'll be surprised, one day he'll just start, and the next you won't be able to shut him up!

DS is 19mo and still doesn't. They are all so different.

No recognise words from either of ours till 18 months.

Mine didn't read the books, either.

None of my 5 dc spoke much other then mama or dada at 1 year.

Only 1 had taken a few steps by their 1st birthday.

Each child is different. If 6 months go by and your still worried contact your H.V.

PFB was saying 2-3 word sentences by about 13-14 months, he started babbling at 4 weeks and now I can't get him to shut up DD is 12.5 months and she only began to babble at 7 months, now she can make sounds like mama and Dada but doesn't use them in context, the only thing I've reliably heard her say clearly is 'car', everything else sounds like gat! I would also think she didn't have a clue except that she's been signing since 6 months and now can happily join in a conversation with her attempts at words coupled with the correct sign. so I'm thinking that all children are different and learn at their own rate, but maybe practicing a few signs might encourage communication? I'd be willing to bet there's a lot more going on in that brain than you think! Grin

I think 12 months is still a bit early to be honest - I think 14-16 months is much more normal for first words. Certainly nothing to worry about if there's lots of babbling.
