Normal nighttime behaviour?

I just need a sanity check please.

DD2 has allergies/intolerances that we're still trying to figure out. But I'm losing sight of what is just normal toddler episodes of nightwaking/teething/poorliness and what isn't normal and down to what she's eating. My memory of DD2 at the same age has deserted me.

Could you please let me know if you've experienced this at night with your young toddler - she's 18mo:

  • Inconsolable crying/screaming for up to 2-3hrs
  • Thrashing around/back arching
  • Feeding for a few seconds at a time and then coming off screaming, then back on, then off
  • Waking every 30 mins for large portions of the night crying
  • Settling best when partially upright and curled up

Just want to add that she's not left alone through any of this, we co-sleep. So it's not a behavioural response to wanting to with us. It's also not every night.

Crikey! That sounds tough on you all. Wish i could post and say that i had this all the time, but mine is a pretty average sleeper and at that point probably waking once every other night for variable lengths of time but not much full on screaming, and generally up about 6am.

was feeling bad nobody had replied though. Hope you can work through it!

My DD is a little bit older than yours (23mo) and not a good sleeper. Like yours, she wakes frequently but when we co-sleep she does settle quicker than that as I think her main problem is vivid dreams/ not wanting to be on her own... Is your DD fully awake when she is thrashing and crying? If not, might it be worth looking into Night Terrors? If she is fully awake, could you she be in some kind of pain with her tummy? Indigestion maybe? The No Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Pre Schoolers might be worth a look. Hope you all get a good nights sleep soon!

That sounds really tough. I know you mentioned allergies/intolerances, but have you thought of reflux (possibly silent reflux)?. Both my two had it, though had grown out of it by about 12 months. Your list of behaviours definitely suggests reflux to me.

Has any GP ever mentioned it as a possibility?

No, that doesn't sound normal, and my DS was a terrible sleeper.

Does calpol make a difference?
