ds pulling willy out of nappy. wee everywhere

My ds is 2 and 4 months and we have a 10 day old dd. Since my last week of pregnancy he has been pulling his willy out of his nappy at bedtime (doesnt do it in the day), inevitably wetting his cot and then crying. We are at our wits end as we are waking up all hours to feed dd. The washing machine is constantly full.

Does anyone know how to discourage this? I have tried saying 'dont pull it out of your nappy', praising him when he keeps it in and also, i have tried not making an issue of it, just lifting him out, changing the sheets and his pj's and putting him back in. Dp suggested leaving him in the wet sheets and clothes, but i am concerned that if it is an attention thing because of the new baby, that leaving him to cry will be his worst fear come true.

What about getting him different nightwear, where he can't get to his willy?

NotQuiteCockney · 04/07/2006 15:06

Different nightwear, as Caligula says.

He's not doing it for attention, I think he's doing it for comfort. My DS1 used to do this, no doubt still does. We had to start toilet training in the day earlier than we wanted to, because of this, and we lifted him in the early evening for ages (but kept him in pull-ups), just to avoid this problem.

I wouldn't leave him in wet sheets. The "problem" is him playing with his willy, the wet sheets happen ages later, there's no way he'd associate the two of them, anyway.

thanks. yes, i am thinking about potty training but at the moment, things are hectic with new dd. not the right time for him i feel. i have tried sleepsuits, shortsleeved body suits, pyjamas. he has figured them all out. his grobag works sometimes but he can undo the zipper. too hot for it now anyway.

popper-up-the-front sleepsuit back to front?

agree there's not much you can do with clothes in this heat though
will just pass on the tip of making up the cot with a waterproof sheet and a cotton sheet, then another waterproof sheet and cotton sheet on top, so if cot is wet in middle of the night all you have to do is whip off the top two layers and put him straight back in.

Have you tried the new-model grobags with the supposedly toddler-proof zippers? If not, one of those in 0.5 tog with just a nappy underneath might work. Or MrsBadger's plan (actually, either of MrsBadger's plans) sounds good.

Welcome to my world. DT2 loves playing with his penis. Used to drive me nutty. In weather like this there is nothing (for us) to be done. Care mat under the sheets and a mattress protector.

Of course it spurred me on to potty training. I figured if he was going to spray the house I may as well get some benefit from it.

Needless to say DT1 cracked potty training and mister man is still hit and miss... and so the spraying continues.... sigh..............

I'm up for all tips though!

have yout ried pull up nappies? Sometimes they are a bit more difficult to pull down if you are lying down IYSWIM.
We had this problem with DS1 - he wore a popper underneath vest for quite a long time because of it but you've already tried that - sorry.
