My youngest son who has just turned fifteen is suffering with depression, I would like him to see a counsellor but do I have to go through the GP, or can we self refer, its been a crazy two years with divorce and lots of turmoil in his life, coupled with peer pressure and exams he really needs an impartial ear to listen to him.

I would recommend that you contact your GP, and ask to be referred to CAMHS. Or if you are in London, you may be able contact them directly [http://www.camhscares.nhs.uk/v/contact]

Best of luck, I hope you find the support your son needs.

I think going through the GP is a good idea as it normalises it. It's an illness like any other after all. You can self refer in some area for cbt too.

My depression started in my teens. Its great you are supporting him and taking it seriously. Really hope he feels better soon.

They sometime won't see children if there has been a big trauma in their lives within the past year. I think the reason being they don't want to treat something the child will recover from by themselves.

Just bear that in mind when talking to them.
