Up till now his weight/size has just given me bragging rights, but when I weighed DS this morning he's now 10kg/22lbs. This is about 0.5cm above the highest centile line in the red book for his age.

He is exclusively breastfed and was born on the 50th centile (3.6kg). DH is tall and heavy build. I'm fairly petite.

If I hadn't been looking at the red book I wouldn't have worried, as he's a happy little guy, feeds are normal, developing fine. However, you don't know what you don't know, so I just wanted to check if this is all OK?

You can't over feed a breastfed baby. I'd probably get him weighed on the HV scales properly and have it recorded officially though, your scales might not be that accurate and you could be worrying for nothing!

Cheeky little sausage, how dare he not follow instructions? Setting a life time precedent there, I'm afraid. Wink

It doesn't matter. Much better ways to monitor his health & growth. Bright & happy, engaged, sociable, plenty of wet nappies, etc.

and ps: do keep bragging! That big baby is your hard work.

I could have written your post 2 years ago. DD was born on the 50th centile, EBF and promptly worked her way above to top line of all curves (WHO bf curve, French curve). By a year old she had quadrupled her weight from 3.160kgrs (2.8kgrs after initial weight loss) to 12 kgrs..and then things slowed down significantly. At the same time she has been gaining more slowly on the height curves and is not settled on the 97th centile.

At 2.5yo she is on the 75th centile for weight and the 97th centile for height. I am short and slim, DP is tall and large, I think DD will certainly be very tall (at 6ft DP is the shortest in his family), but I have stopped worrying about her weight.

During her first year I looked for advice everywhere and my conclusion was that despite WHO research there is still not enough information on EBF babies, that weighing too often can become a problem, and that some babies follow their own curves!

Don't worry too much I'm sure the health visitors would be on it straight away if there was anything to worry about especially as your baby is breast fed, maybe you've just got gold top-nothing wrong with that xxx

My 20 w/o is 19lbs and 98th percentile & solely bfed. I wouldn't worry- mines not rolling yet and I think the more mobile she becomes, she'll lose some. Also, I read somewhere that bfed babies tend to gain more quickly and then tail off quickly too. Has yours got little chubby leg rolls too? Mines a right little chubba lol! X

Thanks all! Good to know there are other babies around the same weight.

He's a very happy little boy (happier than his brother at that age actually!) so I will just continue as we are and get the 9-12m clothes down from the loft!

My little guy is (was, havnt weighed him for a bit) on the 91st centile for weight but only the 9th centile for height. Not worried, as hubby and I are a bit on the short side. He was ebf for 6 months and a proper little fatty. He is slimming out a wee bit now he is more mobile!

MistressofPemberley · 22/10/2013 17:30

This is why I'm not taking EBF DD to weigh-in clinics. I know she'll be heavy and it will give me something else to worry about. It was the same with DS: he was so chubby and always off the chart for weight and twice the size of babies his age. He is now the tallest in his class. Strapping and muscly but no fat.
Try not to worry. You are doing a great job.

My ds1 was 22 pounds at 4 months.. ( 7 pounds at birth)
He was a hoofing chunk of gorgeousness but the HV told me I was over feeding him and I worried myself sick.

He was a chunky toddler (heavier than his sister who was 13 months older) but then levelled off..

He's now a skinny as hell young man, who would love to be heavier!!! Not even very tall.. 5 ft 9, struggles to make 10 stone and as fit as can be!

As soon as he was mobile he slimmed down steadily. Do not worry:)
