I have a 5 year ds who I am concerned about. He has developed fairly normally with all the normal ups and downs I'm sure as any other child. He has always been incredibly stubborn which I have always put down to his nature. For example, he's often not joined in at parties, school trips, but I've not thought too much about it. However as he's becoming older I have this underlying feeling something is not quite right. It seems to be related to 'change'. When he got moved up a class at his sports activity he then refused to go any more because it was a different teacher. He is also not interests in anything to do with sitting down and applying himself and has no interest in any reading/ phonics from school. To the point of literally having a conplete fit if I even open his school bag. I have tried the disciplinarian approach and threatened taking toys away and having to follow through these threats etc etc. I also have gone down the gentler approach and tried to make things feel like his idea which is slightly more successful.

Does this behaviour sound like a normal 5 yr old boy or does anyone think there might be a problem underlying.? The teachers are making me feel bad about his conplete lack of conforming with work at school, but he is only in reception so I kind of feel that's ok and I have to let him find enthusiasm in his own time and pushing him just makes him more stubborn.

I have just read that back and have maybe under played his 'stubborn' side, but I am so used to it! He generally will not do what is expected of him in any social situation, ie wearing costumes at school play, joining in games etc. he is also very difficult to deal with at home with regards to anything we want him to do, eating, sitting, manners, going to have a bath etc etc
