What is happening to my baby?

Hi,

My 5 month old DS has been waking up at night every 20-30 min for feeds for the past two nights! Before that he would wake up every two hours or so. What is happening to him? I'm shattered and tempted to put him on formula!

He is showing signs of teething but it can't be that right? Please help!

Thanks Thanks

It could be teething - DS1 got his first ones at 4 months.

Could be teething, I am sure the teeth move around under the gums in a disco dancing style at night.

5months, could be preparing themselves for weaning time. Not that you need to start but it's just your baby changing and developing.

Could it be a growth spurt ? My little one would do that now and again and the following week he had def grown ;-)

noblegiraffe · 17/10/2013 12:40

You are used to him waking up because he wants feeding, he's probably not waking up every 20 minutes for feeds, but because something else is going on. This could be teeth, overtiredness, or the 4 month sleep regression.

It could definitely be teeth - my two had their first couple of teeth somewhere between 3 and 4 months old.

Teeth/growth spurt/development leap/sleep regression. Even as adults we have bad nights. It will pass though Smile and formula is rarely te answer to get baby sleeping

agree might be teeth hurting, DS got two teeth at 5mo. Next time he wakes can you try a dose of calpol and see if that sends him back off for a couple of hours. If it works, it was probably teething pain.

Also, I know this is not going to be popular comment, but we did start weaning our DS at 5mo cos his sleep went to pot, he was grabbing at food off our plates, could sit well in a high chair holding his head up and was just clearly ready....i followed my instincts and not the guidelines which cannot possibly be exactly right for all the millions of babies in the UK. And I am glad I did. He settled down and became a lot happier once he had a bit of food during the day.

Are there any other signs your LO might be ready for a bit of food?

(before I get flamed, I actually work for the NHS body which devises health and social care guidelines....but having a baby has been a steep learning curve for me and I have realised that 'guidelines' are just that: you can be guided by them but ultimately you have to make your own decisions based on your baby's behaviour and your gut instincts).

Thanks everyone! Smile looks like teething may be the culprit, he bit me today on my breast for the 1st time Hmm

Bot, he is definitely ready for food! Sits up on his own, puts everything in his mouth, grabs food, excellent hand eye coordination, and when you are eating or drinking, chews and drinks with you! I'm definitely considering starting on solids ...

Bot, did you start your LO with purée at 5 months?

It could be teeth my DS had his first tooth at 5 months 2nd by 5 1/2months, he's a horrible sleeper when teething

BotBotticelli · 28/10/2013 20:18

Sorry for late reply Op. Yes I did start DS on purée vegetables and fruit at 5mo. I was really gutted as I had really thought I wanted to do pure BLW but we really couldn't wait. He was much happier with a bit of food. In his case, I don't really think he was hungry for it as such: it seemed more like a developmental thing. Like he was really ready for a new 'thing' to do, and he wanted to mess about with food!

I started him on the day he turned 5mo with a little bit of puréed sweet potato. He demolished it! So lots of different veg puréed and fruit too over the next few weeks and then when he was 6mo started introducing all sorts of different foods - chicken, mince, pasta, eggs etc.

From about 5.5 months I started introducing finger foods as well as purée: obviously just soft fruit and veg at first, but thn at 6mo just started doing a bit of everything. He could happily eat fingers of toast at 6mo.

In the end w have done a real mixture of spoon feeding him mashed up food and baby food, and finger food too. Now at almost 11 months old he just pretty much eats what Ido for lunch (sandwich, tomatoes, avocado, baby crisps!) and then has our last nights tea re-heated for his dinner (fish pie, meatballs and pasta sauce, sausages and sweet potato chips etc etc).

The thing I wish someone had told me is that you don't necessarily have to pick between purées and baby led weaning and do one or the other as an absolute purist: it is possible to start your baby on purées at 5mo and then move them fairly swiftly into finger foods and 'proper' adult foods when they turn 6mo!! I have both the BLW and Annabel Karmel cook books on my bookshelf and have used both! Get stuck in if you think your Lo is ready, and enjoy it!

Bot, thank you! That's a lovely detailed explanation, I shall follow in your footsteps Smile
