Bottles - 19 month old DD

Oh the guilt & shame... DD still has cows milk in morning (first thing whilst sitting on our bed.... While mummy/daddy try to come round) and in the evening (with a cuddle after bath time on the sofa) out of a bottle. I tried to give it to her once or twice in a cup - she sipped it, got confused & cried. It's very much part of her routine & I know I need to do away with it. How did u do it????

Ermmm I didn't. I just carried on until dd decided she'd had enough ... aged 2.5!! And then we wrote a letter to the bottle fairy and left it on the doorstep at bedtime to take to the other babies who needed it and then whoosh the next morning it was gone! Magic!

Ds gave up bottles at 13 months. He just decided he wasn't having them anymore and pushed them away!
I'd just carry on and not worry about it.

My DD is 2.10 and still gets a bottle of formula at bedtime, she doesn't like cows milk and is a very poor eater so I think she needs the nutrition from it. I've no plans to take it away before she is ready herself to give it up.

Bunbaker · 07/10/2013 21:39

I just stopped giving DD a bottle at 12 months. I took my sister's advice when she said the sooner you take it away the easier it is. It worked for DD.

On the other hand I still enjoyed a bottle of hot milk when I was coming up to 4.

Ds is 18mo and still has a bottle morning and night too. He adores it, and I just think sod it, his diet is good, I brush his teeth after it, there are worse things in life!

Loving the idea of the fairy taking it later down the like though. I suspect she might get the dummies then too!

Gooseysgirl · 07/10/2013 21:50

DD is 19 months and has a bottle of cows milk in the morning before she goes to nursery and another before she goes to bed. She drinks loads of water throughout the day from sippy cup/open cup. Have tried to get her to take the milk from a beaker etc but she flatly refuses. In the grand scheme of things it's one battle I just can't be arsed to fight!!! She's a great eater, sleeps thru etc I'm not going to deny her her guilty pleasure Wink

DD2 is 2.8 and has only in the last few months stopped having milk in a bottle morning and before bed. She now has milk in one of those basic Tommee Tippee flip up beakers (to avoid spillage mainly) or from a beaker with a straw. As long as your DD isn't drinking juice from a bottle throughout the day you have nothing to worry about. I just make sure that DD has her teeth brushed after milk before bed.

laughingGnomette · 07/10/2013 23:07

17 month old DS has the same. The morning one while we wake up is a life saver!
At 12 months I was worried about getting him to give up the bottle but decided to just let him decide. He drinks from normal cups during the day and his teeth are cleaned after the bottle so what's the harm in it?

LadybirdSpots · 07/10/2013 23:16

DS was about 3 when the bottle fairy finally paid a visit! I was so,so worried that it was going to be horrendous, but he hardly batted an eye lid.

I decided enough was enough when he was waking up 5/6 times in the night for more milk, it was completely ridiculous.

Don't do it until your 100% sure you're going to go stick with it. As long as your DS is still eating fine, I can't see a problem.

LadybirdSpots · 07/10/2013 23:17

Sorry DD, not DS!

Kiwiinkits · 08/10/2013 05:10

Maybe cut out the morning one first and the before bed one in a few months. Start a new morning routine, like toast in bed instead?

MrsRV · 08/10/2013 19:46

Ok perhaps I need to chill out about it. She has a straw beaker throughout the day with water, she sleeps, eats well etc etc. choose your battles and all that.

Only thing is - I brush her teeth before bottle not after. The reason being is I went to a "teeth talk" at a childrens centre when DD was new & the lady said if u brush teeth after food etc then you are doing more harm than good by grinding in sugar/natural sugars. She said wait an hour before brushing & if u can't, do it before as the toothpaste will offer a layer of protection. This was all news to me... It kind of seemed to make sense though but I've doubted what I'm doing ever since as EVERYONE does it the other way round. Perhaps this is a whole new post!!!

My ds also has a bottle before bed (he is 19 months) we got rid of the morning bottle by substituting it with his favourite cereal and then offering a beaker of milk later on but cant bring myself to get rid of the night time one. He always asks for it and his little face lights up when he sees it. I also brush his teeth after, will ask the dentist about that next time we go

Twattergy · 08/10/2013 20:58

My ds just turned 2, still has formula in bottle on waking and about an hour before bed. He needs the nutrition as he is dairy free. I'd read in MN that they give up drinkingfroma bottle when they decide to, so have decide to go along with that!

Kiwiinkits · 08/10/2013 21:08

Twattergy from bitter experience they just get more and more attached to them the older they get. Better to phase them out now before you've got a two and a half year old demanding a bottle. I think the night time ones are fine for this age group (comforting) but a morning one will be reducing his appetite for a proper breakfast. If you're concerned about nutrition perhaps add formula to his weetbix?

Twattergy · 08/10/2013 21:26

Thanks kiwi that's an interesting point. He definitely still has an appetite for breakfast though! I think I will try him with formula from his Tommy tippy in the evening and see how he reacts! My main concern is to ensure he takes in enough formula which is why I'm reluctant to do anything that might reduce his intake, as he already has less than hv recommended.

TallulahBetty · 08/10/2013 21:37

DD is 22 months and has formula in a bottle morning and night. I'm in no rush to stop this - HV and dentist are both ok with it. Pick your battles, as mentioned above! Wink
