Will he ever move from sitting position?

My ds 10 months is not crawling or pulling himself up yet. he will sit up fine and reach for toys but cries if put on his stomach and kicks and slaps the ground. he has tried to get on his knees (sort of) but just wont move. He is really frustrated and someone had said he should be crawling or at least pulling himself up on the couch etc..
Im just worried i guess. I know they all develop at different rates but some people i know think he should be doing more by now!!

ignore them, he will get there when he is ready, sounds perfectly fien for a ten month old. I have four and although the dts developement was simlar they were very diff to dd and ds1. dd - cruised at around 7 months, walked at 11 months.
ds - crawled at 11 months, walked at 15 months.
dts - crawled at 7 months, walked at 12 months.

It does sound as if your little one might not crawl if he hates being on his stomach. If you wnt to encourage him hold his hands and 'walk' him around, or find things for him to stand up against, liek putting toys on a low table and holding him up to them.

DD1 sat on her bum for ages.

I feel for you. My DH is only 11 months today and I feel she is way behind her peers too. No matter how much people tell you they are all individuals etc it is still a bit concerning. All I can say is that 10 months really is not that behind at all and plenty of babies are just sitting at that age. My friend's DS didnt crawl til 14 months and walk until 20 months so do try as hard as you can to be patient. It sounds as if he is gradually developing so he will do things in his own way in his own time. Please be reassured that 10 months really isnt that old to be doing these things. You ahve plenty of timne yet.

I can almost guarantee, as someone whose ds has been crawling for three weeks (and he has just joined me at the computer to 'help'), that about two days after your ds learns to crawl, you'll wish he was still sitting on his bottom.

jambot · 29/06/2006 20:12

My DD started to crawl at 10 months and one week. Only sat at 7 and a half months. Only rolled right over at 9 months. Now at 16 months, she's running all over the place. Wouldn't stress for a good few months yet.

singersgirl · 29/06/2006 20:19

DS2 didn't move until 10.5 months. He hardly ever rolled and just sat there. We had to tempt him with broken up digestive biscuits in a Hansel and Gretel-like trail. He pulled up almost immediately afterwards, though, and was walking by 13.5 months, only a month later than DS1, who was crawling from 7.5 months.

Don't worry. Babies who don't move are very easy to look after - we had just moved abroad at the time and DS2 didn't much like the pool at first, so I would leave him by the side with his stacking rings and take DS1 in. Fantastic. He stayed exactly where I put him.

DS is 9.5months. He happily sits, rolls and when face down cries to be helped. He is just starting to show signs of trying to pull himself up onto his knees, but other than that, not bothered. He is doing a lot of bouncing around - in the cot as well as on the floor, my knee etc, so probably exercising the muscles to get them strong enough to moblise him.

my dd4 has only just started to crawl properly 13 m before that she was a slug and then a sort of bum shuffler --waiting for her to walk now lol
they all do it at their own pace I am not worried just enjoying every moment.

Vivi36 · 29/06/2006 21:23

Lynsey, don't worry about late crawling (not that 10 months is late...) - it doesn't make any difference in the long term.

I remember going to a mums meet-up when ds was about 8-9 months and one of the other mothers "walked" her daughter into the room (holding her hands) - my ds hadn't even rolled over at that stage!

He then started to crawl at 9 1/2 months and walked at 12 months. Once they get going they can suddenly progress really fast...

Have got a dd now almost 8 months...happy for her to stay in one place for a few more months!
