When did your baby find their thumb to suck?

DD is very sucky. I keep thinking she'd be happier if shelearned to suck her thumb.

DS didn't, he liked my finger though. I got a dummy for him. He started chewing it instead of sucking it at 6 months and then lost interest.

I think we were lucky but I don't think dummies are that bad! I still suck my thumb as an adult Blush

DS1 - about 10 weeks. Concided with better sleeping. (not great, but better :D)

DS2 - never. Not into comfort items at all. Likes as much boob as possible and is still a pants sleeper at almost 18 months.

My DS was 10 weeks and rejected the dummy as soon as he found it. At nearly 4 he still does it. Trying to break the habit but it's not easy at all.

Mine hasn't found his thumb yet at 8 weeks, but he's also a very sucky baby. I caved and gave him a dummy at 6 weeks despite being totally adamant I would never use one. He only needs it between about 7 and 9pm when he's tired, doesn't have it at any other time.

I agree that it'll be easier to wean her off a dummy as you can just take it away, her thumb will always be there!

Around 6 weeks I think. Refused dummies, thank goodness as I hate them but thought we'd try. He only sucks it when he's tired, like someone else said it is a great indicator, as soon as the thumb goes in it is nap time!

Mine never did

DS1 - by 4 weeks
DS2 - never
DD - 2.5 years old

I wish none of them had. Whilst all 3 have had private orthodontic treatment, DS1 and DDs problems have been far worse. DDs particularly.

notadoctor · 29/09/2013 21:56

My DD was sucking her thumb at her 20wk scan and it then took her 2-3wks of being out in the world to find it again. She's 22mo now and only really does it at bed-time.

Ds at 12 months Grin he sucks his thumb to show me he wants his sippy cup. Kids are clever little things!
