Speech delay?

DS2 is 18 months old.
A wonderful, energetic child with (in my opinion) a very good understanding. Eg. He can take directions, bring particular toys when asked etc.

On the other hand he doesn't say much and I'm starting to worry ! At this stage DS1 was putting 2/3 words together and could say tons!
DS2 can currently say about 9/10?? (mumma, dadda, nanna, g-andad, hello, buh-bye, no, yes, here is,go)

Am I worrying about nothing mums net?

nothing to worry about just yet.... the fact that he understands you is good as is following directions.

HV/GP won't refer until at least 2, so see how he goes! am sure his language will continue to come on :)

Yep worrying about nothing Wink

I posted something similar about my DS2 not long ago but he's come on so much just in the past few weeks. He's 21 months now and says about 60 words. I was comparing him with my DS1 though who was speaking in sentences at this age. It's hard but try not to compare him.

A speech therapist told me that on average children have between 6 and 20 words at 18 months. Some will have none and still be in the range of 'normal' by the age of 2. Don't panic. It will all come eventually.

Thank you both for your replies.
Glad to hear he is in the 'normal' range, that's a very good point about comparing him to DS1. They are completely different children and I shouldn't really!
Will see how he goes Smile

My son was born prem so is behind anyway, however, he only started saying his first word - "mama", just before his second birthday. He'd already had a hearing test last year to rule out any other causes as to why he wasn't saying anything. He's now 2.7yrs old and in the past two months he's gone on to say at least 20 words and now repeats everything I say and is putting words together. All along the way, the Doctors have said as long as he can understand and follow instructions and is aware of what you're talking about, eg "show me the blue ball" and is able to do so, then there's nothing to worry about. Some children just take all the info in before they decided to communicate back.
