Limping

KATGOD · 26/06/2006 11:15

DS aged 2 and 5 months has developed a limp. No obvious trigger. Been to doctor, she referred to A&E who have referred us back to outpatients. Dr and A&E had no idea really. He appears to be in no pain, quite happy to play football, ride bike, etc etc. Severity of limp does change during the day. Any thoughts or similar experiences? If potential to be something serious would rather go private and get sorted, but if just one of those things he might grow out of don't want to. Just really sad to see him hobbling about. Have checked shoes, socks, feet and no obvious problems there. Thanks

i dont want to be alarmist but is it possible that he had some kind of oxygen deprivation when he was born?? im only saying that as my friends son wasnt diagnosed with cerebal palsy untill he failed to walk at 2 and a half. i would ask to see a physio or a chilrens playworker who might be able to help him stretch it out.
good luck...

goodness I hope not, he's been charging around quite happily for the past year or so, and has no other development issues. Think that may see how long wait is at out patients then decide whether to seek help privately - if it is something serius like you've suggested would hate to wait.

Has he had a cold recently? Sometimes the same virus can affect the hip joint and it becomes inflamed but an anti inflammatory (like Nurofen) could help.

dd had a random limp recently - and I know from googling there are a shed-load of things it could be. fortunately for us it was v slight swelling on her ankle from badly fitted (new - grrr) shoes. However there is potential for it to be serious, so if that's your criteria for going private maybe you should. like you say, maybe wait and see when your appointment is

i didnt mean to scare you!! its probably justa sore joint or a tendon that hasnt quite stretched. there are so many things it could be i would let the doctors rule out the serious stuff first. my ds2 likes to copy a boy with cpalsy in his class, much to the boys amusement ( they are only 5). he has a whole line of them following him around at brake time!

I looked after a child who did the same thing at around the same age. It was just a phase the doc said and he was right(after all the tests you mentioned). The little fella charged around all day with no limp but at playgroup and at home he limped turns out he just thought it was a good thing to do. His sister now thinks its fun to walk around with straight legs and arms but only when she thinks someone is looking.

Thanks for messages - he's still doing it, still in no obvious pain, it's been a week now. Phoned docs and they've had nothing from A&E, but a doctor is going to call me tomorrow morning to discuss referring to outpatients. Hope it gets moving then.

Not to panic you but is he being checked for Perthes Disease?
DD had a psot viral joint inflammation and was investigated for Perthes disease too
It took dd 9 days to stop limping from post viral joint probs
Perthes disease should be ruled out asap though

Hi,
My DD did this and I did the same as you, no obvious probs with shoes, socks etc. Had her feet measured, took her to docs and then to A&E where she raced around limping!!
After about a month she just stopped!!!!
and has not done it since. It frightened the life out of me and I was imagining all sorts of things but in the end I think it was just something that she wanted to do for a while and then she didnt want to do it any more.
Hope that helps somewhat.
Lou
