my dd is 10.5 months and has a spotty rash round her chin and cheeks, a very spotty bum and about 3 spots on each arm. on Monday she was grizzly with a temp but was ok by Tues. Mon night the spots arrived. she has none on her torso at all and doesnt seem to be itchy. A doc I saw yesterday ummed and aahed then said chicken pox, keep her away from cm all week! now, I understand CP to be blistery itchy spots all over starting on torso and spreading so I was surprised by the diagnosis. do you think this is worth a second opinion? hand foot and mouth?

MyNameIsAnAnagram · 25/09/2013 14:03

Ds2 has chicken pox ATM ( caught from my shingles poor love and he's only 19wks) anyway his are mostly on his head. If you look on the nhs site there are pics of what chicken pox looks like so you could compare?

Whatever it is hope it's over soon!

hand foot and mouth gets my vote too

There are no spots at all on the palms of her hands or the soles of her feet so I dont think it can be hand foot and mouth...

I could have written this post!

DD2 has spots around her mouth and bum,a few more on arms and legs. They are fluid-filled pustules but not CP (too neat and tidy, none on tummy) or HF&M (not on hands or feet). The doctor was baffled.

A friend thought it could be a form of impetigo, but I though that was a secondary infection

Where are you BTW? I'm nowhere near Brighton Grin

I am very near Brighton :-)
I did wonder about impetigo but I think it goes kind of yellow and crusty after bursting, which doesn't describe what my DD has. How strange that your little girl has this too. I don't have any ideas but I was wondering if is perhaps just a type of viral rash.??

I think it must be. The doc uttered those immortal, unhelpful words, "It's just one of those things." I wish it was CP so we could get it over and done with.

FWIW, chicken pox is VERY distinctive. It's just so medieval-looking. We were told by our doc that DD1 'might' have had CP when she was about 18 months old. When she did get it, aged 2 years, I went into her room that morning when the first spots came up and went, "Ah. THAT'S chicken pox." And they came up so fast.

Thanks WhatHo I think you're right, I will probably know when it is CP although I am a bit cross with the GP, as I feel like she just plucked a diagnosis out of thin air without thinking about it properly, which has so far cost me a day at work. I think if it hasn't started to go away by the weekend I will take her back to the GP(and probably be told it is just one of those things..!)

I reckon hfm. DD didn't have all of the symptoms but then the rest of her nursery came down with it Blush . Interestingly one child had 'chicken pox' at the same time.....

Editededition · 29/09/2013 07:15

Chicken pox normally starts on the torso and, although its not unknown to start on the face, it is very unlikely that it would progress from there to the bottom with no rash in the normal CP areas.
CP spots continue to develop over several days and then clear gradually.

I think your GP was fishing in the dark OP. Do get a second opinion.
