Dreaming about floods and fires and dying?

My dd has a recurring nightmare about being in the van and it being in a flood or fire and her dying. Tonight she came down to say she'd had another dream, the van was in a flood and she was screaming and crying, daddy was already dead, eventually she fell out of the van and into the water and then her head sunk and she died!

She shouldn't be allowed to have such horrible nightmares!

that's awful. poor lambkin. what are you going to do?

When my ds was having nightmares I went out and bought a dream catcher. He had never seen one before and so believed me when I told him it was magic and that it would stop the nasty dreams and cause he really believed in it he went to sleep knowing that he would be fine which i think settled his mind and because he went to bed relaxed he slept fine and this confirmed its magicnisity (is that a word??) and the nightmares stopped.

Your poor DD!

er, I've sent her back to bed! Why, was that bad?

I drew a picture of a 'dream fairy' for her and put it on her wall, but it hasn't worked!

Rhubarb - has your dd recently had a talk from a fireman recently?

I only ask because ds1 had a fire-engine and crew visit school recently, and he's now become very nervous about what would happen if there was a fire, and would we all die, etc. No nightmares yet, but a couple of times it's taken quite a while to calm him down before bedtime (I think he's particularly scared of there being a fire when he's asleep).

I've talked him through what we would do in the VERY unlikely event of a fire, what the fire alarm sounds like and how we would get out the house. I've also reassured him that everything is switched off at night, and that we weren't smokers - so any risk is very small. That did seem to help talking matter of factly about it.

No, no firemen. She's a nervy little soul and there were floods here in the Spring (not serious) and so everytime it rains she asks nervously if there will be floods! She's terrified of everything!

Oh bless her - I really can empathise, ds1 errs on the nervy side too.
