Advice/Help please! DD2(nearly 21 months) biting/slapping/scratching and generally playing up when I am bf dd2 (19 weeks)

There is 16 months between the dd's. I thought I had got away with minimal jealousy/sibling rivalry but in the last week it has become a bloody nightmare.

As soon as I pick up dd2 and start to get my boobs out, dd1 starts playing up. Uses the sofa as a trampoline and when I stop her she bites and scratches me, this then progresses to her slapping me and then slapping dd2 - who is happily feeding/sleeping.

I know dd1 is jealous - but what do I do? I tell her no, I take her off the sofa, I tell her to stop biting etc try to read books with her, have special time with just me and her etc. I/we don't smack - is she too young to understand the naughty step etc.

Dd1 is usually such a good natured girl and still kisses dd2 - even when she has just bashed her!

Dd1 goes to nursery 3 days a week so I only have to cope for 2 days by myself and the period after I have picked up dd1 until bedtime - it's enough believe me!

Any input would be gratefully received as I am getting really upset and feel really powerless and crap!

Hi. Have you tried reading her a story while you are feeding? or some other activity you can do whilst sitting down......that way she might feel that she has more of your attention.

hotmama · 23/06/2006 19:08

Tried that. & special toys etc.

It's really advice in how to respond to her behaviour etc.

as long as baby is safe, i would as far as is poss try to ignore it.

hotmama · 23/06/2006 19:15

dp thinks responding to behaviour may make it worse and ignoring may make her behave better - what do you think? Hard not to respond though!

what i mean is that she wants your attention, and by giving it to her ( even if angry ) she is getting her own way. my sister in law had a similar problem in that if older child smacked baby she would put baby in cot and go and tell older one off......bingo older 1 had mummy to herself

troub;e is she is still very little, but have to say i think he is right...... just not easy to ignore it.poor you

Its normal. Mine used to trash the sitting room while I was feeding number 3. You've got to chill about it as far as possible, and try to distract them.
