i have 3 kids- 2 boys, 5 & 7, and a girl, 4. my 7yo (ds1) is autistic. the younger 2 are just learning, and im trying to encourage dd to wipe front to back. ds1 has been toilet trained for 2 years now (his development was delayed) he has been trying for so long to wipe himself but just cant seem to get the hang of it...

at the end of the day when they change pants for bed, he has skid marks and sometimes gets sore. i tried to explain that he needs to wipe til theres no poo coming off, and he blocked the toilet up using so much tissue (and still had skid marks) bless him lol same with wet wipes.
he doesnt seem to understand that he actually has a hole in his bum (to his autistic mind its just bum cheeks and poo comes from them) and that poo gets left on it.

im stumped. is there a certain way to teach it?

hmm not had this experience (dd is only 10 months) but just some ideas

  • try showing him his anatomy in a mirror? you wd need two mirrors - but that way he can see the crease, hole etc.
  • try applying a cream to the area which you have chilled in the fridge, then get him to wipe it off, that way he could feel where it is iyswim.
