16mo and amount of words?

I've not really been able to find anything online but I was wondering what would be an average amount of words for a 16mo to have?

Trying to see if my daughter is progressing ok and I thought some MNetter out there might know!

I think that by 18 months it's normal to have between 12-20 words iirc.

Thaleia · 11/09/2013 20:22

Well, don't know the average but we have only one: yummy :). But it's like everything - every child is different.

feekerry · 11/09/2013 20:24

again don't know the average bit dd is 17m and can say no, eyes, up and a few animal noises like woof, miaow. that's it!!
chatters away all the time but i have no idea what she is saying!

Rhubarbgarden · 11/09/2013 20:42

No words here yet at this age.

armsandtheman · 11/09/2013 20:43

From memory, just a handful at 16 months, DD is 21 months now and she's learning new ones every day (although they are still very garbled I can recognise them). The rate has really accelerated from about 20 months. Giraffe and butterfly today, so cute.

MurderOfGoths · 11/09/2013 20:43

DS is 17mo and only really has dada and mama.

pinkpudding · 11/09/2013 20:45

My dad is 16 months and has no actual words but lots of babble

BoysRule · 11/09/2013 20:48

My DS2 is 15 months and only has mama, dada, his brothers name (which is unrecognisable to anyone else) and one animal noise. DS1 was the same and didn't really talk until he was 2. He very quickly had an incredible amount of words.

Please remember that every child is different and a hv will notice if there are any problems at various checks. Neither of mine ever met the 'should be' category of 'What to Expect in the First Year' or any other development book.

elQuintoConyo · 11/09/2013 20:48

As Murder ^^ at 16mo, FS could say mummy, daddy, no (of course!), and woof was for every animal - dog, cat, horse, ant, gheko! At 21mo he's jusr found he can say miaow and loves it!
He's got about 30 words, ish, and said his first 'sentence' of two words yesterday: more pasta.
We aren't worried, he waffles away in his own language and it will click soon enough.

KB02 · 11/09/2013 20:53

My ds is 17 mo and says da da, bye bye, night night, baba for apple, there and a few animal noises. I had also been wondering where he should be up to but seems similar to other posters here .

MacNCheese · 11/09/2013 20:59

My dd had non but by 19 months was speaking in sentences.

GirlWithTheYellowHat · 11/09/2013 20:59

Thanks for the replies, my DD seems to have quite a few words then, upwards of 30. This isn't a stealth boast or anything, I was really just genuinely interested as I know these things even out in the end.

She's my PFB so I've no clue about progress and my HV has left so they're waiting to give me a new one, due DD2 today!

My 18 month has 50 + words and is starting to join words together. A few of my antenatal friends have babies with similar vocabulary, but others have babies with barely any speech. Not sure what average is to be honest. At this age i wouldn't worry either way.

teacher123 · 11/09/2013 22:05

Ds is nearly 17mo and can say door, that, this (which he uses for everything that he can't say the word for), hiya, mummy, daddy, grandma, grandad, stairs, nappy, bee, and tree. He babbles away constantly and is mostly incomprehensible!

mrscog · 11/09/2013 22:05

Des didn't have any at 16 mo but now at 18mo has about 15 and is adding to them daily.

teacher123 · 11/09/2013 22:06

Oh and most importantly-CHEESE!

DS does a very good sarcastic laugh, it can be mortifying Grin

TrickyBiscuits · 11/09/2013 23:24

I'm with Miaowcat, DS seems to have lots of words in both English and his daddy's native language, he even points to objects and says 'what's this?' He's not even slightly interested in walking though, I reckon we're still a few months off even!

partyondude · 11/09/2013 23:30

Dd had over 70. Ds had 6. They're all different.

At 16 months, not very many - daddy (no mummy grr), bye bye, cat and shoes. But at 21 months she's picking up new words almost every day and gabbling away, so I think it's beginning to click. She didn't bother walking until 18 months either, so I think I have a super lazy baby (has definite advantages - she's a great sleeper!)
