Weaning and gagging on finger food

Hi, ds is my 2nd child and is 8 months old. I did pure BLW with my daughter 5 years ago and planned on doing the same this time.

However ds gags on absolutely everything that moves to the back of his throat. By gags I mean proper gagging until he brings up the entire contents of his stomach.

I've tried and tried, and 2 months in we're still on purées (lumps are fine). It's just such a hassle. Will he ever eat 'proper' food? Or will he be one of those children who still eats puréed food aged 2?!

I regularly give him finger food but the results are always the same. He's now not really wanting purées, interested in food - but the tidying and clean up operation of BLW plus a ton of vomit is hideous.

What can I do?!

I seem to be writing this on every thread at the moment, but is there any chance he has tongue tie? That's a fairly typical symptom...

He is only 8 months so purées don't mean that he will be on them when he is more than double his age. BLW means the baby is supposed to be leading and he is.

true exotic, true :) its just frustrating i guess!

My ds now 2.2 was a gagger and weaning was quite a slow process.. No way I could have done baby led weaning. I was very worried about it and took him to the hv. They ruled out anything physical and just put it down to an part over active gag reflex and part preference. They said it was quite common.
I'm not going to lie, he still won't eat alot of what other kids his age will eat but he very rarely gags now and he is starting to eat new textures and try new foods everyday. Definitely getting better as the days go by and has no purée at all but does still have a strong preference for all his food to be immersed in a sauce / gravy to make it sloppy. (Casseroles etc)
Ive long stopped Fretting though and let him call the shotsz In your case, I'd just let him eat what he can manage. I premember some well intending mum telling me that it was ok if he vomited, that that was a normal part of learning process and just to persevere and if he's hungry he would eat. I think that advice was wholly wrong. Why keep giving a child food that makes him vomit??? Quickest way to cause an issue with food if ever I heard. If all he can manage is purée then stick to the purée and gradually increase the texture. Keep offering the finger foods and one day he will get it. I've never yet met an adult that has to have puréed food so I'm sure we all get there eventually. [grin ]
