it is getting increasingly difficult to change our ds! he wanders off his mat on the floor with poo on his bum etc... I've tried toys and he likes ripping up tissue paper but this getting pricey!!! how do u do it!!! I dread changing his nappy...

I perfected the 'leg over' change with all of mine . Basically changing mat on floor, sit slightly to the side with one leg over baby then you have both hands free! This was recommended by a midwife mother of 6! When using high changing mats when out and about I gave them my keys or mobile phone! I used to call it the 'nappy wars '

sympathy here - my 9mo is a nightmare at nappy change time and i dread it too. I still change him on our change table (one of those dresser top ones) cos my back gets totaly banjanxed from doing it on the floor.

In a way it's better on the table, cos he seems to sort of 'know' he can't crawl off anywhere. But obviously I cannot even move 30cm away from the table and have to keep a hand on him at all times in case he tries! He does try to roll over onto his belly, smearing poop into the mat/his clothes/my hands etc. I tend to try to distract with a toy he's not seen for a while, or failing that, I just have to manhandle him fairly firmly until he stays still Hmm and just try to ge it doen very quickly.

Hopefully it's a phase....i have heard once they can stand it often works better to change them standing up? Might be worth a try if your ds is on his feet?

Having exhausted all other options, I ended up getting a changing mat with straps.

elQuintoConyo · 02/09/2013 19:35

Stickers on the hands? Sometimes that'll fascinate them enough for quick changes. Do you have all the wipes readily pulled out? I always got about 10 ready, those I didn't end up using I just rammed back in the pack.
I lost all nappy-changing cooperation when DS could turn over at 3mo, he's just started cooperating again at 20mo Shock

My DS will lie still if he has a bottle of water to drink. Used to give him a bottle of milk to drink whilst doing it but read that the milk can pool in their ears and cause ear infections if they drink milk whilst lying down.

If your DS only likes juice then give juice, my DS only has water and is happy with that!

I always found getting them to stand up the easiest!
So, pull up nappies, get them to bend over so you can clean them properly then put the pull up on.

For some reason, even wriggly, fidget bum DS1 found standing for nappy changes ok, almost like it didn't count because be wasn't lying down Hmm

sophiad · 04/09/2013 13:52

My 5 and half month old can be wriggly when changing. Tries to roll as nappy comes off etc. this may sound weird but I've noticed if I wear a big necklace and stand over her she's distracted by it long enough for me to change her! An excuse for you to purchase some nice chunky necklaces maybe!

PurplePidjin · 04/09/2013 14:14

I do everything with my right hand while holding his feet up with my left. Once I've got the clean one in place i quickly do the leg snaps and adjust the fit afterwards :)

estya · 04/09/2013 16:26

I do it with the baby trying to crawl away but hold on to the tail of the vest so they can't get anywhere. You can then wipe the bum with the other hand.
Then sit them on your knee to put the nappy on.

WeeLors · 04/09/2013 17:07

Somebody on a Facebook group I'm in once suggested rolling some sticky tape into a ball and giving it to them. They get so engrossed with passing it from hand to hand (cos as they pull it off one hand it gets stuck to the other) that they don't even notice the nappy change. Might be worth a try :)

Failing that, use the sellotape to tape them to the change mat (joking)

Jakeyblueblue · 04/09/2013 22:23

Pull ups if able to stand so they can just step into them.
Ds was the same, hes been in pull ups since 10 months. there was no way he'd lie there and let me change him no matter what I tried.
If a really dirty nappy I usually hang him over the top of my knees with bum in the air and do it as quick as possible. Grin
