11 week old cries suddenly in sleep?

Hello everyone,

I have read that babies sometimes cry a little in their sleep but my little boy sometimes actually starts crying really loud and really suddenly for no apparent reason. And it's not a small starter cry or something it's a loud hearbreaking yowl!
Does that happen with your babies?
He's otherwise a smily, happy and quite easy going little boy.

thanks!

Yes, my 5mo has done that for about the past 2 months - a massive great scream as if he's terrified. I am startled out of sleep and shoot upright all disorientated and he just remains fast asleep.
He also lifts both legs in the air then slams then down on his mattress at the same time, sometimes for up to 20 minutes...still stays asleep.
I sort of expected that once he slept through I would too, but it doesn't seem to work like that most nights!

ok thanks, nothing to worry about then i suppose, hopefull it will pass!

Could it be wind? My DS (9 weeks) sometimes cries out in his sleep but goes back to sleep once he's been winded and brought up a few massive burps.

Hi new i don't think it is wind as he does this also after having been burped.I've been reading about "night terrors" so think it must be that!

DD (9 weeks) does this! I stick my leg out the bed & rock her Moses basket for a bit Wink She always quiets down. She chatters away in her dreams too, she's so noisy in her sleep, it took me ages to get used to!

RubyGoat · 03/09/2013 00:34

My DD always did this, she eventually grew out of it, I think between 4-6 months. She does occasionally sing in her sleep though. Smile Not a total surprise as I am a sleep talker. And insomniac, obviously.

We came to the conclusion it was night terrors. She would scream as if in utter terror, we'd wake up to soothe her & she was fast asleep.

Similar to Lego, my DD did this between about 3-6 months - it was like night terrors. She would go to sleep then wake terrified after about an hour and crying inconsolably - genuinely terrified and we couldn't calm her for ages. Your post has just reminded me about it, but she has seemed to have grown out of it.

Yes, a lot of that at 3-5 months, mostly at daytime naps, very stressful, I was dreading every nap... Spoke with 2 pediatricians (he was under follow up for other reasons), one of them specialist neurologist, none were concerned. Now, at 8 months does not happen anymore, although he still sometimes wakes up crying (but not inconsolably screaming). And also used to bang legs, as described by greta, that only stopped recently.
My frieds DS used to cry like that too - now very bright happy 11 year old.
Very hard when they do this, but they grow out eventually...

thank you all for your answers, i haven't just got a very anxious little boy then!
I'll be glad when he grows out of it though!
