5 month old not feeding well

Hi, my 5 month is on formula and can normally drink anything from 4-7oz at a feed every 3-4 hours. Last night and so far today he has only been drinking max of 4 oz but spitting up about half of it. He is on infacol as he suffers a bit from wind , he has burped fine at each feed. Anyway I was just wondering if this is normal or should I be worried ? He is not distressed or anything . I have called HV but got no answer so just thought I'd ask for a quick opinion while I waited to try HV again.

If he seems otherwise happy then I wouldn't be overly concerned either with the vomiting or the reduction in milk volume. Keep an eye on nappy output perhaps to make sure he is still weeing and pooing ok, and see how it's going in a couple of days.

How are things now gamer? Have things improved? My friends Lo is ff. yesterday she was windy and refusing bottles. We held her in the tiger in the tree for a while, she farted (lots) and then happily took her bottle. Tiger in the tree is on youtube if you want to give it a try.

Is he normally windy? Has he ever been checked for tongue tie?

gamermum · 03/09/2013 21:31

Hey, tiger in a tree and I are very good friends. He is a very windy boy:) infacol does help with the burping though . Went to HV today his weight is good and she suggested starting to use stage 2 milk( but weaning him into it like 2 feeds a day to start ) as he has been waking more at night too so I guess she putting it all down to him being hungry . Possibly when he feeding gulping it too much and getting extra windy. Anyway i gave him a feed of stage 2 and he drank 7 oz did a big burp and went for a nap :)

Fingers crossed this works . I'm just happy he is doing good with his weight , I got a bit worried.
Thanks for the replies

By stage 2 do you mean hungry baby milk? Did the HV check his height too?

gamermum · 03/09/2013 21:48

Yeah the hungry baby milk . Never has had his height checked , why? I often wondered about height as there is a page for it but assumed they must only do it on toddlers .

Hungry baby formula doesn't have any more calories, it just makes them feel. Fuller for longer. I'd give it a try but sone people find that their Lo wake more, not less as baby is trying to get the calories from missed feeds in the day iyswim.

Think the advice from your HV is pretty poor. She shouldn't really be trying to limit the amount of milk your Lo has without taking his height in to consideration. Taller babies often need more milk and he NHS only recommend first stage formula until they are one, so she's not following NHS guidelines.

Ok see now I'm confused and worried again. Thanks for the info I will read up on it more in the morning then call HV to discuss it.

Sorry didnt want to make you worried. Is he taking his full bottles now?

Rhubarb78 · 04/09/2013 09:16

Hi op, just wondering, does he need a faster flow teat? The only time my ds would not finish his bottles was because he needed to go up to a faster teat.

gamermum · 04/09/2013 12:07

I have tried him on faster flow but he is not able for it yet. I gave him stage 2 before bed last night he drank 7oz and he went from 8.30 till 3.30 then he had 5oz both no problem. Then his morning feed he drank 4oz and spat it all back up( seemed quite pleased with himself :) ) he has just had another feed now drank 5oz and didn't spit up at all. Last night was the best sleep he has had in ages so it looks like the stage 2 helped but I'm not sure bout it now after what jilted said.

Could it be that he's just teething? my boy lost his appetite at about 5 months and was dribbly and putting lots of things in his mouth (except food ironically) now he's almost 6 months and we're expecting a tooth any day now!

gamermum · 04/09/2013 13:14

Poor love has been drooling like mad and chewing everything for over a month already I said this to HV and she didn't seem to think it was teething though. The main thing is he is putting on weight so I think I'll stop worrying so much .

If he is teething try him with a teething gel, like Dentinox, just before you offer a bottle. You could also try giving him a cool, clean wet flannel to chew on.

mrsbeano · 04/09/2013 15:05

I quite liked the teething powders before a bottle when DS was teething and off his milk. Even now at 14 months, teething tends to lead to less food.

I find hungry baby milk an odd suggestion as he's eating less anyway.

Hemlet · 04/09/2013 15:16

The teething crystals are brilliant for before the teeth cut through. Loss of appetite is a very common side effect of teething so I'm surprised your HV dismissed it so readily.

gamermum · 04/09/2013 17:19

Great advice ladies. I will try it all ! The joys of being a first time mum! I guess I shouldn't take all of HV advice if you are all saying it sounds a bit odd .

If the hungry baby milk contained more calories than first stage formula I could understand her suggesting it but if he is still not taking enough formula it is a really, really odd suggestion.

I've always taken my completely barking and sometimes dangerous HVs advice on feeding with huge pinch of salt Smile
