At what age should no walking be a concern?

DD is 16months and still not walking. She was late crawling, started a week before her first birthday. She will cruise round the furniture. But will not walk with us holding her hands she'll simply drop to her knees and crawl away. I know they all do these things in their own time but its hard not to worry Sad She will be on her tiptoes a lot of the time when standing holding on to something or cruising.

I am trained to refer parents back to the GP or hv at 18 months. I've just had a little boy with me who walked at 18 months and he's fine. :)

geologygirl · 28/08/2013 22:09

Don't worry. Some take a bit longer and if crawling at a year old she probably has a little while to go. Has she got a walker? Sometimes little ones can be lazy about walking and then prefer to crawl instead! A walker might make the idea of walking more fun?

My son had one given to him on his 1st bday and he was walking the next day!

lessemin · 28/08/2013 22:12

My dd was 17 months when she started walking. Smile

Bertiebutterfly · 28/08/2013 22:17

My 17 month old DD2 is still not fully walking. She has started, in the past couple of weeks, walking a few steps unaided but will often drop to her knees and walk on them as it's faster.

She will only do what she wants when she wants to. She will get there though. She's got a physio referral for when she's 18 months. We might need it, we might not Wink Try not to worry or compare. They do all get there in their own time.

Keznel · 28/08/2013 22:17

She had a walker the type that she sits in, but I felt it was encouraging her to tiptoe, so I haven't put her in it in a good while. She has a wee push-a-long which she will take a few steps with then drop to her knees. I guess she is making all the right moves and will do it eventually, but I'm probably letting the comments of others get to me more than I should! I have one particular relative who's favourite catchphrase at the minute is 'isn't she walking yet?' I am tempted to throw something at him Grin

DS1 was 20months before he took his first steps. Before that, he would crawl, or hold onto the furniture looking across the floor. He didn't cruise at all.

He was late crawling too, he was around 11 months. So, one day he took two little steps and the next day he was walking up and down the kitchen.

They are all different!

WingDefence · 28/08/2013 22:21

My BIL never crawled and didn't start walking until 24 months apparently. This was back in the 60s so they were probably less stressed about it then but he's absolutely fine now!

MrsBungle · 28/08/2013 22:23

My dd was 17 months before she walked. She never crawled - only bum shuffled. She didn't weight bear or stand. The week before we saw a paed (for the weight bearing - they weren't bothered about not walking), she stood up and walked - just like that!

Ds has been crawling since 7 months and walking since 9 months - they are all different.

18 months is usually the point at which your GP would refer you for further investigations. Try not to worry though, I'm sure it's just a normal variant especially if he is well grown & developing well in other areas X

21 months here!

We did go to physio as ds was prem and his ankles rolled inwards. Consultant paediatrician said they wouldn't have concerns until approx 22 minths

Ponders · 28/08/2013 22:30

Dd2 crawled on her first birthday & walked at 19 months

I walked at c 18 months so didn't fret - like late bedwetting, it's less of an anxiety when you know it's in the family Smile (we had bedwetting too!)

KnottedAnchorChief · 28/08/2013 22:34

My dd is 18 months and just started walking this week. She has done a bit of cruising but mostly preferred crawling to being on her feet. It would never have occurred to me to take her to gp to get her checked as I assumed she would do it in her own time and she has done.
She's been legging it round the garden all day today at top speed.

zebrafinch · 28/08/2013 22:36

DD did not walk until 22 months. I was concerned but I was considered to be over anxious. She never crawled but bottom shuffled. I eventually had a full physio assessment for her. Turned out she had low muscle tone just within the normal range and poor stability in her pelvic and pectoral girdles. I took her to tumble tots and she did exercises. She is grown up now, has still difficulty riding a bike, climbing ladders and swimming. As none of these are essential for her job she is doing fine . Trust your instincts.

SimLondon · 28/08/2013 22:38

22 months is when it's considered late - the average is actually 14 months - Keznel, i dont think you need to worry :-)

My DD was 15 months but she was a late crawler too at 12.5 months. I wasn't too worried as I myself didn't walk til 17 months - I didn't even crawl Grin

difficultpickle · 29/08/2013 08:02

Ds is 9. He didn't walk until he was 22 months. I queried it with a paediatric consultant who said they would only be concerned if he wasn't walking by the time he was 2. Other than being a pain having to carry him walking late didn't affect his development.

difficultpickle · 29/08/2013 08:04

Ds used to crawl after his walking and running friends. I got sick of the comments too.

lljkk · 29/08/2013 08:08

Agree with others. DC have a 2nd cousin who didn't walk until 22 months and barely bumshuffled before that. Now 11, he often wins running races for his school.

Keznel · 29/08/2013 08:22

Thanks so much for all your posts, that's very reassuring! I tell myself not to worry all the time but first time mum, so I guess I worry unnecessarily about a lot of things. I think I will burst into tears the day she finally does walk Smile
