Nappy advice!

Everytime my 4mo DD has a poop it goes everywhere - always comes out of the sides of the nappy, down her legs etc. It's becoming a nightmare and it's stopping me going out as the clean up operation usually necessitates a bath (and she always seems to do it either while i'm out or right before i'm about to go out).

We are currently using Asda's Little Angels size 4 nappies (she's approx 15lbs) - they've been really good up until the last 3 weeks or so. I think the problem is that DD has quite a wide bum (she's fairly compact, and not long) so the nappies are slightly too narrow for her. But i don't have the money to keep buying different brands to try out and see if they work. We were on size 3, and so moved up to size 4 but this doesnt seem to have helped much.

Can anyone recommend any nappies that are quite wide, or good at keeping the mess inside the nappy?

Just4Bums are pretty good but tbh I've found that disposables just aren't as good as reusables for containing poo. Sorry, probably not very helpful!

size 4 might be too large - if they fit loosely the elastic won't hold it in. my 23 month old is in size 4 to 4+ as a comparison. if you are sizing up just to increase how absorbant they step, don't bother for poo Smile

I've not found a huge difference between different own brand nappies, unless you use value/budget ranges. Pampers always worked well for me as well. so ithink it's possibly size, not brand.

also, I remember lots of explosive poo at that age. wriggly baby covered in poo from next to ankles ...

Buy a few of these or similar - designed to go over reusables but work brilliantly over disposables too. Agree that size 4 sounds too big though - DS has always been 95th centile and went into size 4's around 7 months!

Great, thanks for the tips. It's definitely explosive poo for sure - and she's teething too which apparently makes it more runny? When does the explosive poo stop?
I wasn't sure about the size either - the size 3 goes up to 20lbs (dd is 15lbs) and the size 4 goes from 15-40lbs on the packet but maybe I need to go back to 3s...

Personally I'm of the opinion to stick with the smaller size as long as possible, as you get more nappies in the pack :) plus they do seem to fit better in my experience.

I would go back to size 3 too and I also found just4bums from kiddicare good. I remember the explosive poos well, don't worry they soon move on to more solid man type poo when on solids.

bonzo77 · 28/08/2013 19:46

I'd go back to the 3's. make sure you do them up as high up as possible (belly button inside the nappy) and fairly tight. Once the nappy is on make sure the frilly bits round the thighs are all sticking out. We rarely have had leakages, even through the 2 week bout of diarrhoea that's just finished, though the nappies are on tight enough to leave marks (like socks do) on the thighs.

DeathMetalMum · 28/08/2013 19:51

Possibly try boots or sainsburys they both have a sloghtly elasticated waistband which tends to keep the poo in at the back. I also find I can put the nappy on slightly tighter at the front which helps with the side leakage issue. My 5 month old is in size 4's I think it just depends on the shape of your baby both of my dd's have large bottoms.

We get the dry fit/superdry type nappies as there are usuall a couple more in each packet.

Aldi nappies are great (called mamia) really reasonably priced and better then all the supermarket own brand ones i have tried. I think they are actually even cheaper than the supermarket ones

coolpink101 · 28/08/2013 22:04

Thanks for all the replies. I'll go back to the size 3s and give them a try again. The majority of the leaks tend to come from the sides around her right leg (always the right leg!). Will doing the nappy up tighter at the waist help with the side leakages too?
