Only 14lbs at 10 months old - anyone else on the .4 centile?

Hi

My amazing daughter is 14lb at 10 months old. She was ill after she was born and didn't gain weight for 2 months.

She is eating well but everyone says oh isn't she small.

She is on her legs and eating lots of solids but people comment how odd it looks because she is so small.

Does anyone else have a little one who is the littlest they could be for their age?

How do you get on?

Weight-wise, my daughter was 2nd centile until 16 months. Whilst 97th or above for height.

She didn't gain properly for first 6 weeks (only 7lb4oz at 5 weeks) and was 14lb6oz at approx 10 months. (Red book comparison as got son's today!)

She's now 4, 42lbs, 118cm tall. She caught up, eventually. The comments sucked, but are now worse as people assume she's at least 6, and she's only just 4.

My son is 3rd centile for weight... I expect we'll be in the same boat again!

Both my girls were small, both weighing about 21lbs max at a year.

DD1 is now 5 and very skinny and slim, slightly shorter in height than her peers. Last check she was under 25th centile for both.

DD2 is 3.3 and still only about 24lbs. She has seemed to only be growing very slowly! Shes very short for her height too. 0.9th centile for both height and weight. She looks about 18mths so totally confuses people when shes starts talking complex sentences to them! :)

DH was like this as a child too and was almost put on growth hormones so guessing its just in their make up.
Its not through lack of eating though as the girls have the most amazing appetites. We always get comments on how children so small can eat so much! Even I dont know where they put it!

re comments, we just say.. you should see how much she eats though! and joke it off.
If people say about DD2's height then I just says shes my Pocket Rocket and that the best things come in small packages.

It also has some advantages.. like the zoo we visited recently automatically didnt charge us for DD2 as she looked under 3 :)

Try not to worry about it. As long as shes healthy. Someone has to be on the lower centiles :)

Not quite the same but my dd is 9th centile at 8 1/2 month but 98.9 centile for height!!!!!!!! She is only just in 6-9m clothes everything is always baggy n short lol. It used to break my heart when hv asked how prem was she? She was fussy with milk teethed really early and had silent reflux. None of which helped her gain weight. Develpoment wise shes right on track!! The best things come in small packages. X

My ds weighs 23lb at 3yrs.
Due to illness

My ds2 was born in the 0.4th centile and had reflux but always gained weight steadily and now at nearly 4 is on the 25th, he's quite small but doesn't look too small compared to his friends.

My ds3 was also born on the 0.4th and has gone upto the 0.9th at 9 weeks and is piling weight on so can't see him being small for long.

My dc2 was on the 2nd centile until i stopped charting it and is still very slim but average height aged 5.

The specialist checked him for a few things but said he was just small and told me to throw away the charts.

He started walking really early and by 11 months was running and climbing on things at the park and people used to always comment that they'd never seen a baby that young walking- assuming he was about 4/5 months old!

The whole point about centiles is that people are spread over them with some being on the lower centiles, some in the middle and some at the top end. Someone has to be on the lower centiles otherwise all adults would be the same size and we aren't! If your child is healthy and growing and developing normally then being a small child/adult shouldn't be particuarly worrying. If there is a hormonal reason for slow growth this can be treated and if you are at all concenered it might be due to growth hormone deficiency, ask your GP about tests and physical checks for signs of pituitary gland probems, though I suspect these would not be done till at least 2 years old, not at 10 months.
