Hi Guys,

My baby is 10 weeks old and from about 2 weeks has been very windy. He cries and seems very uncomfortable when passing wind, goes very red in the face and from about 4am -7am every morning he makes grunting, uncomfortable noises and does little cries in his sleel(whilst passing wind). It's awful to watch, knowing hes in pain and sometimes will start earlier than 4am and its impossible to sleep through as its soooo loud!

The HV said it sounded like colic as he was lifting his knees to chest and had other symtoms. What I'm confused about is he has now stopped lifting his knees to his chest(which I know is a classic colic symptom) and he doesn't really cry for hours which I have also been told happens with colic.

I have tried Colief,Infacol and Dentinox and none of them make much of a difference and I'm wondering if its because he doesnt have colic at all and not something else. I was breastfeeding but am now using Aptamil Confort and he seems a little better but it hasn't made a huge difference.

Sorry for such a long message but I'm wondering if it is Colic at all or something else and anyone has any ideas or help they can give me?

Thanks x

When's your next appointment with your HV OP?

babyfev · 27/08/2013 21:44

I can see her anytime I haven't got a appointment booked x

So he is doing this in his sleep? I don't think its colic then, colic is full on screaming for hours. What you've described sounds more like fairly normal baby behaviour, nothing you've said would suggest he is in pain.

There is some information on colic here.

If he is windy, has he been checked for tongue tie?

Have you tried wearing him in a sling (helps them to trump usually), no nappy time in the day and before bedtime and baby massage before bed? My dd used to trump loads in her tummy tub too Smile

Aargh, why did my message not post?!

In case it doesn't, I'll try again! Here is the shorter version, sorry!

My DC2 was the same, OP. My DC1 had full-on colic and it wasn't the same. DC1's colic was related to an illness and passed in a few weeks, but it was a few weeks of intense screaming for hours on end, accompanied by explosive green poo.

My DC2 would wake around 4-6am, cry/scream intermittently as he farted repeatedly, and it was evidently all to do with trapped wind. It went on for much longer IIRC.

When DC2 could roll by himself, he chose to sleep on his front and that helped, he slept better. He is now 2yo and still sleeps on his front and still passes a lot of wind (with accompanying cries) at night.

I think some food allergies might be his problem, and I am starting down the road of investigating those at the moment.

Perhaps try a different formula, a goats milk one, etc?

PoppyWearer · 28/08/2013 11:31

P.S. I used to scour Mumsnet and the Internet for hours for answers. You feel so helpless, don't you?

I really feel for you. Take care and good luck x

JiltedJohnsJulie · 28/08/2013 11:40

Don't think that goats milk formula is legal in this country poppy.

OP if you suspect intolerances have a look at allergy uk then make an appointment with your GP Smile

JiltedJohnsJulie · 28/08/2013 13:34

Have you tried dr browns anti colic bottles and winding him half way through a feed as well as at the end OP?

PoppyWearer · 28/08/2013 14:06

Thanks for the update on goats milk formula, it's been 5 years since I tried that with DC1 and wasn't aware of the new guidance! Thanks

My Dd is similar and I have met others in the same boatwhich has reassured me as dc's 1 and 2 had no such issues. I think it is basically trapped wind. If it helps Dd is gradually less unsettled from 4 to 7am the more time goes by; to start with she was generally crying unless asleep curled on my chest (v sweet but knackering) and now it is more like sone minor discomfort in her sleep and not every morning. She is just about 12 weeks.
I think their digestion is v sensitive and this gradually rights itself over time. Hence I didn't bother with infacol etc as thought it was more about time and development than a serious health issue.

My DD had similar issues until we changed her to ready made formula from the powdered stuff (SMA gold) The change in her was almost instant! Apparently the readymade version is gentler on their stomachs, it's thicker & easier to digest & tastes sweeter.
Maybe worth a try? It worked for us anyway Smile

ButteryJam · 29/08/2013 19:04

Could she by any chance have silent reflux? Worth looking into

jammiedonut · 04/09/2013 23:24

How long did you try infacol etc? They generally don't have a significant effect unless they've been used for several weeks, likewise the switch to formula will take a couple of weeks to impact. Ds suffered with colic, we spent a good hour doing the cycle of feeding and winding, and were told to put him to sleep on his tummy. Worked wonders for us, along with baby massage. If you're uncomfortable with the tummy sleeping, try doing it during the day when you are always watching I.e tummy time or naps. As far as I know, nothing is guaranteed to get rid of colic, just take the edge off, so try notto expect too much. I, for example, am very happy with 3 hour bursts of sleep, 5 and I'm in heaven!

Definitely get checked for tongue tie (unfortunately HVs are mostly not great at spotting it you may need to see a lactation consultant)
