I have this problem too.
Let me know when you find something.
Sometimes lash 'em together with a bit of string.

They're crap really,aren't they??

Nemo1977 · 16/06/2006 20:29

We have exactly the same problem with Britax seat & 17 month old.

Today I managed to stop her by using velcro to keep straps together at chest height but I'm sure she'll undo it sooner or later - certainly a 2 yr old would be strong enough. Also it slip down to the buckle & so is no good. I might try using one of those plastic push fit clips that's come off an old rucksack or something & sewing the fabric part to the straps (if you see what I mean).

egypt · 16/06/2006 20:39

just realised that medulla's link is for 4cm straps so thats no good. our straps must be at least 5cm

Me too girls dd2 (2.2) is doing this alll the time and it is driving me mad.

madmarchhare · 16/06/2006 20:40

Read something the other day though about the padded bits on car seat straps are often being used to high up and that they should be further down, more over the chest area.

madmarchhare · 16/06/2006 20:41

sorry, point being is that hug it thing looks too big to do this.

Medulla · 16/06/2006 20:42

Sorry :(

egypt · 16/06/2006 20:43

think i shall get a hug-it

egypt · 16/06/2006 20:45

posts crossed again. i know what you mean madmarchhare. but as dd is getting bigger the padded straps aren't long enough to come over her chest. ( have a britax first class)

no probs medulla - you are still a star!

I would suggest the houdini stop

www.houdinistop.co.uk

It has been crash tested as well as approved by the ACRI as safe.

It clips on dead easy, you can do it with one hand

It doesnt move up or down without any real force

Our youngest was always pulling his arms out but this totally did the trick.

I read a lot about these sorts of things being illegal and dangerous as it takes the emergency services longer to get them out in an accident. The way i see it, if you have a crash and your child has their arms out of their straps they are going to be in great danger before it gets to the point of the emergency services trying to get them out of the car. And at the end of the day the strap can be cut int he middle if needs be.

As for it being illegal I have done my fair share of research and can confirm that EU legislation states you cant SELL a car seat with this type of thing on it, but there is no law against buying one, or attaching one yourself.

We feel much happier and more comfortable driving now knowing the he is fastened in securely and not with his arms out all over the place.

Had trouble with my boys doing this tried everything until one day we were stopped at a police checkpoint. Had a nod with the policeman and asked him to comment to the two boys about their straps. He opened the back door checked their straps, told them they were great lads for keeping their hands in etc made a little deal out of it. Never had a problem again! They give out to each other now - if one has his hands out the other says 'the policeman wont be happy with you!'
