Getting a baby into cot from sleeping in arms

My 14week DD is a great sleeper. However, in the evenings she feeds approx 6pm and then falls asleep in my arms. She would pretty much stay asleep if I didn't move. However if I try to put her in the cot or give DH a chance at cuddling her she starts to cry.

She feeds on and off all evening, dozing in between (ah to be a babe!)

Weird thing is, if I feed her and put her in the cot around 10-11pm she goes out like a light! No complaints.

How can I get her to rest in the cot during the evening? I'm stuck in bed breast feeding and watching tv which is nice but I need to start to reclaim my evenings a little, especially as she is sleeping but only ON me it seems, until she is ready for her cot later.

Any advice to get her in the cot earlier on?

Ooh yes we also did that too. We had one of those motion sensor ones so that if she woke up again it would play the bedtime song and hopefully, sometimes she'd go back to sleep. Smile

Ok might try gro bags, even during the day. Currently trying to get her down for nap but if she ain't asleep soon there will be no chance of her sleeping by 7pm...how does she do it??

Im in the same boat OP Grin

She was awake at 7.00 today & has just gone to sleep in my arms. I think I will try the Grobag & that book!

Thanks

She is asleep in the grobag! AND IN MY ARMS!! This driving me bonkers but she needs her sleep than I need to move right now. Surely it was a nursing mother who invented iplayer?

Hello mama I'm pretty much in the same boat with my 5 month old DD who is currently napping on my lap!

Have tried moving her to cot during naps but she wakes up as soon as I put her down. Same in the evening - she cluster feeds and naps between 7-9 (give or take!) and I've resigned myself to having dinner with her latched on on/off (we sit downstairs with DH though rather than in the bedroom).

I tell myself she'll eventually grow out of this - she used to only be able to sleep on my chest (yes, ALL the time!) but she sleeps in her cot ok now at night.

Same here too here with 15week old if its any comfort! We started trying to do "bedtime" a couple of weeks ago at 7pm but she just wakes all the time until 9ish.

She's asleep on my lap ATM...

So as of tonight we're going back to 9pm bedtime I think...

TheCatSofa · 29/08/2013 17:37

Same with my DD she is nearly 7 weeks. She is sleeping for 5/6 hrs at night then a feed then sleeps for 2/3 hrs which is GREAT but during day feeding loads, almost hourly and nly sleeping on me for short periods - 15/30mins max.
it's lovely but then in evenings she is v overtired and cries A LOT. Growth spurt? Phase? Is anyone experiencing same? It's a massive achievement to have shower/lunch each day!

Callmedreckly · 29/08/2013 17:54

Oh the evenings are horrible!

The over-tiredness. I spent most of June walking round the garden with her between 8-9pm. Sad

She cries less at night now, maybe for about 15 mins.

Another dispatch from beneath a sleeping baby here. Mine's 10 weeks. Swaddling helps a bit, well wrapped in a stretchy swaddle, fed to sleep, sneak the bugger into his Moses basket. Works about 50% of the time Grin

Feed lying down, with book, then perfect the stealth ninja roll away leaving sleeping baby on bed.

Downside: baby tends to still be in bed when it's time for u to go to sleep.

TheCatSofa · 30/08/2013 07:18

Last night my DD slept from 10.30/11pm to 6am without waking for a feed! Amazing to get that sleep for us but I am hoping it is OK for her to do this? I read small babies should feed every 4 hours but on the other hand read that they are also self regulating so not to worry Confused

Thumbwitch · 30/08/2013 07:26

Grobags did it for us - it stopped them noticing the change in temp when I put either DS down.

I also do the "feed lying down and stealth ninja roll" from DS2 - if he's fed anywhere other than lying on the bed, he doesn't nap for more than 10 minutes, whereas feeding on the bed and leaving him to sleep can get me up to a 2 hour break Grin

TheCatSofa · 30/08/2013 09:10

Now she is still sleeping aftr feeding at 6am about half a boob.. also she had not done a wee by 6am.. should i be worried???? I'm a new mum so everything is a bit confusing!

mamabrownbear · 30/08/2013 09:49

Catsofa, our DD had a few nights of sleeping through early on, it didn't last, got into a good routine shortly after that.
Progress update on napping/evening sleeps - got her into the cot at 6pm and she conked out for 30 mins...got her down again at 7:30pm and she slept through until 10:15 when she woke had a feed and went back to sleep until her 3am feed! Basically the earlier naps didn't interfere with her normal sleeping pattern.
Fingers crossed she keeps this up.
What did we do? To be honest, I'm not sure...I put her down much earlier than normal as she seemed tired. When she woke after the short snooze we had a little play, read a book then fed until she was asleep. She went into the cot with no complaints. I also had all the lights down and Euan the sleep sheep was playing his harp music! I'll repeat the process and let you know if it becomes a pattern!!

Well that does sound like progress! We went the other way - managed to get her to have an extra little nap around 6, then put her to bed later then usual around 815. She did a 40 minute sleep at 9 then fed and went back to sleep for 3 hours - which may not sound great but is better than we've had for weeks...so I think it's late bedtime for us for a whole.
