Can a new born sleep too much?

My DS is six days old and sleeps almost constantly. I really don't want to complain ( its fantastic of course) but I feel a bit worried. He was born by elective CS at 40 weeks and I wonder if the shock of his birth is part of the reason he's so sleepy. He does wake to feed, about 6 times in 24 hours but generally falls straight back to sleep after each feed. he was 9 lbs 6, don't know if that's relevant. The midwife says its fine as long as he wakes to feed but I can't help but worry as DD was as different from this as possible. Has anyone any experience of a baby like this?

New borns should sleep for about 22 out of 24 hours - yours is doing exactly the right thing.

Congratulations :) My nephew was like this, and he had a bit if jaundice which made h sleep loads... It was nothing to worry about and he is fine but apparently that his one of the symptoms xx

Thank you. That's comforting. I think its the inference from DD that's throwing me. My DS is slightly jaundiced too so maybe that's contributing.

I do have to smile when my girls were born IF your baby didn't sleep for every hour between feeds, golly the social worker carried on. Hold onto the hope that it means he will always be a good sleeper.

Don't worry, my dd slept lots, woke for feeds and put on weight.. I was worried she slept so much but like you had a c sect although was emergency one.. we thought the same it was a shock to her & needed sleep to recover..
is still a great sleeper even now:-) 21 months on!
enjoy your quiet time, once on the move no quiet time anymore:-)

Ds2 and dc3 slept loads in their first couple of weeks.
In fact I can mentally picture them in their Moses baskets in front if the window in our old house.
Ds1 did not sleep, he was less easy as a young child, but lovely now.
Enjoy x
