Don't know how you stop 'em, Threebob - DS1 is doing it too and I've already been "told off" for "letting him learn capital letters" Smile

You can't stop them, dd (2.4) is learning capital letters and her ABC she also picks up alot of things from TV (cbeebies), she can read numbers, count to 20 and knows all the shapes, i hav'nt gone out of my way to teach her these things she just loves to learn.
She does have a toy that teaches letters which i got as a free gift and she plays with it evry day, it would feel wrong to hold her back when she want's to learn.

but surely its just common sense to teach lower case letters as they are the ones you read and write 90% of the time? UNLESS YOU ARE WRITING RANSOM NOTES REGULARLY?

hunkermunker · 16/06/2006 18:53

Like I say, I'm not teaching him them, he is just picking them up. A lot of signage, etc uses capitals - he's fascinated by London Underground signs, for instance. Plus Countdown, obviously Wink

The words that ds can read it makes no difference whether they are upper case or lower or a mixture, so that's that theory debunked.

Although we consider Reception to be the start of children's formal school education, it's really more of the 'structured play'. A Reception classroom doesn't look all that different to a Nursery. So they don't really start 'school' until Y1 age 5/6. But I do feel that the schools are under too much pressure to fill the children's day with educational opportunities. At this stage it's still about preparing them for school, learnign social skills and teaching those that are interetsed or able to go further. I remember in Reception we still got campbeds out and all lay down for a rest or nap in the afternoons. That doesn't happen here, with the result that many children are utterly exhausted, especially the summer babies. What educational value has that got? Also you hear of nurseries that won't allow 3yo to nap 'to prepare them for school'. This is outrageous IMO.
