Are security 'blankets' bad for little one?

Sorry to ask a really stupid question but my ds1 is 15 months old and has a wooden spoon for a 'security blanket'. He looks for it as soon as he wakes up, carries it everywhere even in the bath, and I can only take it from him once he falls asleep.
I have to admit it looks kind of cute when he toddles around town with this spoon in hand and he gets lots of 'aws' from passersby.
Only problem is that he will not use his left hand for anything. If he is pulling his chair or toy box he will do it with the right hand only even if it means that he falls over. And of course whenever he falls over his scrapes his knucles on the left hand as it is always tightly gripping the spoon.
I wouldnt mind if he swapped hands occasionally but am worried that this may be interfering with his development (he was showing a preference for using his left hand before he discovered the spoon). Am I just being silly? And what does it say about me, that my son needs a spoon to comfort himself (mad woman!)?

He was particularly lovely today Hunker.

"I have so much love inside me today I can love you and daddy at the same time."

When I told him it was time to leave next door, he tidied away all the toys back into the basket and thanked our neighbour "for having us".

He asked her for a cloth because he had "juicy hands" (she had given him an apple) and he didn't want to make stuff juicy.

I have rung my neighbour and organised for her daughter to rewrap the teddy and return it, as after talking to him, I think he wanted to see his little friend, but felt he needed to take something around as an excuse (I usually go round if we get her post by accident or something).

Sorry for the long silence. Its nice to know that I am not mad, or at least that I am not alone! ds1 managed without his spoon all day on Friday but did however throw a massive tantrum in the toy section of Harrods. We were escorted to the 'Express' lift back to the ground floor. I am so mean. Will give it back to him today.
