My ddis almost 11 months but around xmas 9 months she started to say "caaaaa" when a cat came on tv or when reading her a book she would point and squeal at the cat and say "caaaaaaaaaaaaa" so im sure she was saying cat, a few people heard and agreed. around the same time she also start saying "git".

she sad both of these words for a few weeks but suddenly stopped like she has forgotten how to say them, she still point at the cats and gets excited.

strange...

My dd used to say baa for bye at around 10-11 months, continously day and night, even when we were not going anywhere it was always baa, baa, baa. Then when she learnt to say mama, she suddenly started saying mama for bye instead only it had changed to amma, amma, amma all the time. I thought to myself, I hope she doesn't get into the habit of this by replacing every word she knew with her new one. She figured it out in the end!

They are funny, with speech and it is probably stored in her memory for later on. She might be learning a new word, the reason for caaaa being on hold at present.

Enjoy it!

ds did this all the time - experimented with a word and then seemed to completely forget how to say it - he's 2 and will sometimes still do this - refuse to say a word I know he's said the previous day/week. Very frustrating when you're trying to be proud about how many words they've got..!

She hasn't forgotten, she just knows how to say it now so is storing it away and concentrating on trying to say her next word!!!

Lottie used to say more and do the sign with it as well. Then she dropped the word and only signed it and now she's dropped the sign and only says it! That's kids for you!

I agree with thomcat.... babies vocabulary is like an empty dictionary- the pages are there but they are empty- they learn a word which they recieve praise for- they test it out a few times - and then when they have perfected it they add it to their dictionary! I would only begin to worry if they are still only saying odd words - and not stringing 2 or 3 together - and still learning but losing them-when they are around 3 or so- if you get a 3yr check the HV looks for this- if not just bear it in mind.....she's still so young....i'm sure you'll be posting here in a couple of months saying she's babbling non-stop!

DD, 16 months, used to say a v. cute 'doytz!' whenever she saw a dog. We loved it so much. Then she stopped. Just like that, overnight. I'd point madly at any passing dog and say 'look! doggy!! doggy!!!' and she'd look at me as though I was slightly retarded, then look down at her hands in embarrassment until we moved on ...
