Why is my 13mo suddenly falling over all the time?

Hi im new to MN and this is my 1st post. My 13mo DD has been very steady on her feet and walking confidently for the last 6wk. For the last few days she's started just falling over thin air ALL the time - every 1/2 minutes. Nursery have pointed it out as it resulted in bump on head and cut lip from falls there on Tue. She doesnt seem to be presenting symptoms of an ear infection . . .any ideas why this may be happening? Has anyone else experienced this? Shes not wearing shoes when this happens so dont think it is to do with adjusting to footwear.

Any advice welcomed!
confused Mummy x

There was a post about exactly this in 2008. You can google it a get the responses. Growth spurt seems the most likely as well as other factors such as teething. I remember my first daughter was very unstable at times and it is almost as if their brains are telling them to do something the body cannot actually achieve - just yet. If she was ok before, no doubt she will be again.

You need to take her to the doctors just is Incase there is a physical reason she is falling all the time x

Thanks so much for your responses ladies. It seems likely she may be having a growth spurt as her appetite has become ravenous over last week or so. I may pop to Drs to make sure she hasnt an inner ear infection just incas. Thanks so much for your knowledge! xx

Sometimes it could just be extreme tiredness eg has she dropped naps or sleep?

RubyRosesMummy · 20/08/2013 13:48

Hi CreatureRetorts
Yes her routine has been distrupted lots since my return to work FT last week and starting nursery as im having to wake her at 6am poor thing. Im sure she'd definitely having a growth spurt as she seems to have shot up and her nornally sparrow like appetite is unfaultering . . probably linked to running around and all the stimulation at nursery.

When Im off with her she'll have a nap of anything between 1-2 hours at around 12noon but this is really variable at nursery. And since my MOL has started to look after her . . . she is really shattered as she has so far undermined all of my requests and refuses to put her down for a nap at all!

Thanks for your advice ladies

You need to get your DH to speak to your MIL. That quite frankly is unacceptable for her to deprive your daughter of much needed sleep! Horrible woman.

RubyRosesMummy · 21/08/2013 08:57

DH has had a stern word with MIL....just about to drop my DD there now....fingers crossed she implements our requests! Feel so guilty going bk to work and leaving her there each Wednesday. Might have to just put DD in nursery all week :(

Ruby, I'm just responding to your last post really as it looks like you may have an answer on the main issue. But it's just to say PLEASE don't feel guilty about working. You are working BECAUSE you love her. We all do what we have to do to keep going. Smile

aftermay · 21/08/2013 11:25

Is she tired in other ways? Whingy etc? I'd have a check with the dr if nothing obvious to rule out first.

5madthings · 21/08/2013 11:28

It may well just be tiredness etc but I would have a check with a gp anyway and if ot continies it's then on her records etc.

CreatureRetorts · 21/08/2013 12:28

I would put her in nursery all week. She will enjoy it and thrive I'm sure. Yes it's hard having work go to work and we feel all sorts of guilt. But how does the extra cost of nursery compare to you going part time eg doing a 9 day fortnight or compressed hours?

lasseg · 02/09/2013 21:12

One other thing that can affect balance (may have already been mentioned) could be inner ear trouble, like fluid behind the eardrums, etc.

Even if it's not enough for a fullblown ear infection, sometimes it can be enough to throw off their balance and make them seem kind of top heavy and clumsy.

RubyRosesMummy · 19/09/2013 13:31

Hey ladies
Sorry for the lack of response - was busy getting married! Her balance issues have sorted themselves out! Reflecting on it, i think it was a growth spurt - she's shot up and her appetite has become instatiable. I guess she was pretty new to walking then too so maybe her coordination was being tested.

Think I was having a bit of a wobble about work, but feeling a lot more reassured now. I really love working and have worked so hard to get to where I am in my career.

Having a few issues with nursery though now! After initially spending 4 months there and loving it, I returned from wedding and honeymoon on Mon to find out that OFSTED have been in following parent complaints and the rating has gone from 1 (outstanding) to 4 (inadequate)! 6 members of staff have left in the last 2 weeks ive been on holiday too.

I think i may have to move DD. Has anyone had to move DC before? As shes only been there a few months im hoping it wont be too disruptive for her.
