Tips for 5 month old getting really cross at not being able to crawl

5 month old DS is obsessed with trying to crawl, constantly rolling onto tummy and trying absolutely every position to get moving.I know this is normal but the problem is since he's been able to pull himself up to sitting he can't safely go in his bouncer or swing and after his feeds I have nowhere to put him that doesnt result in him vomiting everything up because of putting pressure on his tummy.
If I put him on back on rug or in cot he immediately rolls onto tummy and starts back on his mission to crawl and if he goes in bouncer or swing he sits up and leans precariously over the side to try and get out!
He is still a bit uncomfortable in highchair and gets v cross even though we have one of those ones that reclines, and the bumbo makes him vom too because of the sitting position it induces.
Anyone any helpful tips or gadgets that can help with this predicament?

Patience! ... enjoy your child's babyhood as it will be gone in a flash. Trust me your son will be mobile before you know. You don't need any fancy gadgets to teach him to crawl. He will work it out before very long.

You will need to move all breakable objects out of reach and childproof the house. It only gets worse when they learn to walk and climb!

This is when the Jumperoo comes in handy! Could you borrow one from someone? It was a godsend at that age.

bootsycollins · 14/08/2013 13:23

Jumperoo is your saviour, if you can't borrow one you can usually buy one off eBay for £40

schoonko07 · 14/08/2013 13:59

Yes have jumperoo-is fab for 10mins to get something done- too but that also makes him sicky if in it just after lunch.
ReallyTired gadget request isnt to help him crawl, more something I can set him in that will keep him in a comfortable non-vomit inducing position after feeds. Not in any hurry for him to crawl other than for his own peace of mind,he's my second and believe me I am in no hurry for his babyhood to be over,in fact I thought I'd get another couple of months before this would even start!

You feel this will go on for ages but if he's that keen he'll probably be crawling in a couple of weeks if my Dd is anything to go by (she was crawling at 5.5). It's annoying now but it will be over very soon!

Does he wear a sleepingbag at night times? It took ds a while to work out how to roll over I'm his sleepingbag.

My ds I'd also prone to puking in most positions, we have a cuddly time and look at books or watch tv for 20 mins after food and I hold him in a slightly reclined position.

I found that having ds naked helped him to crawl, he never really practised crawling, he hated tummy time, one day when he was 6 months old he just rolled onto his tummy and could crawl, it was during that really hot weather so he was naked lots of the time and I think that helped him get a good grip.

Could you put him in a buggy with some toys? Or out in the garden so he can look around (if the weather is ok)

DD woke up with a glint in her eye on the very day she turned 6 months and that was it - she was off! It really won't be long.

A treasure basket?

twinklyfingers · 15/08/2013 19:06

I second time naked if you can face the potential wee and poo carnage. I would suggest getting one of those picnic blankets that are soft on one side and waterproof on the other and give him time on that. My dd seems to master lots of things once she's had a go in the nip!

A jumperoo might keep him entertained for a bit, but it won't help him learn to crawl or walk. I suspect they might actually delay that sort of thing because it isn't practising any useful skills but takes up energy which could be used rolling or pulling up on his knees or suchlike. Just my hunch though so do ignore if you like!

A baby nest has worked well for us at times like this and is good for when they are sitting up but not reliably.

schoonko07 · 15/08/2013 22:38

Thankyou all for good suggestions! He does love being in the nip and I should really take advantage while it's still warm.
He does use a sleeping bag but flips pretty easily rven in that and if it is the type with poppers at the shoulders he then just pushes and pushes with his feet until he has opened them and wriggles out!
I suppose while I'm not in any great hurry for him to crawl if he's that dead set on it he's just going to continue in this vein until he's able, and maybe being up on his knees
rather than all the pressure on his tummy might help with the sicky thing.
Thanks again!

My ds still pukes at 10 month's old if he crawls soon after food :(
