Unsettled 10 week old

Hi all

I am after some advice or comments if others have the same experience as me. My DS is 10 weeks old and pretty much a happy content baby in the day (after winding after each feed) but come late afternoon he becomes really unsettled, sometimes as early as 3pm. I'm pretty sure that he is suffering from wind and is over tired as he really cries when he passes wind. I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this at all as it seems to be getting worse in the evenings and much more difficult to settle him- I was hoping it would get better as he got older but it seems to be getting worse.

Any advice/ feedback would be welcome.

many thanks

Hello, Just to reassure you, if it is wind, it will pass (excuse the pun!) as your Lo gets older, and his guts get more mature and better able to cope with digesting milk.

My DS had terrible colic/wind and was really unsettled in the evening/night until he was about 3.5 months old, when suddenly he started to get better....we had a few good days, and then one day I noticed he hadn't really done that windy/unsettled/in pain thing for a while.

Things that helped us were:

  • lying him on his back and vigorously cycling his legs in the evening, this seemed to stop him crying.
  • also lying him on his back, holding both his feet and pumping his knees back and forth up to his chest and back down, iyswim?
  • also firmly massaging his tummy in clockwise circles around the belly button and stroking him tummy downwards from nipples to nappy with both hands.

Also, have you heard about the theory of 'purple crying'? Basically, it suggsts that some babies just go through a period of being unsettled and crying a lot, which might not have any real cause, and it's just soemthing you have to ride out and comfort them as much as you can. This purple crying is supposed to peak at around 2 months, which would be where you are now, which might be why it seems to have gotten worse? I seem to remember weeks 8-13 being pretty tough going. And then my DS seemed to 'settle' down a bit. Started sleeping longer stretches at night, esp bewteen 8pm-midnight, and wasn't so windy in the evenings.

hang in there, it will get better. Here's some info about the theory of purple crying: purplecrying.info/

I found reading this very reassuring when my DS was very young.

Thank you BotBotticelli, your post gives me hope! I know it is just a case of hanging in there but these past few evenings have been really difficult, roll on 13 weeks :0)
