How do I know when to potty train?

DS is 2.7. I started trying to potty train him about 3 weeks ago with the aid of chocolate buttons and Fireman Sam pants, fancy "seat" potty my mum gave us, and lots of praise/positivity when he wee'd/pooed in potty.

We lasted 2 weeks. He was having more accidents than successes after the initial novelty of the potty/chocolate buttons wore off, especially with poos.

He has progressed in that now, when I can smell something and ask if he has done a poo, he actually says yes. He would deny it before and run off as he didn't want me to change his nappy.

Are there any cues I should be looking for before we start again? I assumed that because he was having so many accidents he just wasn't ready, but did I give up too soon?

No, I'd say you did the right thing.
DS2 announced last night he wanted to wear big boy pants (he's 2.2).
I'm off work with a stinking cold, and he's at nursery today..... They know he can go back in nappies if he or they want.
Give it a month or two, and ask him!
Disclaimer: training DS1 was horrible. I'm not a pro

Sounds like he's not quite ready yet so good to stop and try again in a few weeks. My ds has no accidents now and wees and poos on his potty - but only when he's naked from the waist below! Operation wear pants is this week! He's 2 and a half!

Leave it a while and come back to it. We are only just training our DS who is 3.7yrs. I wouldn't have left it so late but we had another baby recently so that made me put things on hold. However, we tried several times during his 2nd year and I now know he just wasn't ready.

Ps not trying to suggest yours won't be until this age, just my personal experience! X

My dd is 2.4 years and I am in a similar position, dd has done lots of wees and poos in her potty but novelty now seems to have worn off and as soon as she is distracted or playing she forgets to use the potty. I am going to keep encouraging her and she'll do one or two wees in her potty but mainly wear a nappy and I am going to try again in a few weeks. My mum said I'll knw when she's ready because it'll be easy.

And your mum would be right saraloula! My dd was showing signs as in grabbing her bits and saying wee wee after the event, also always used to sit on the potty and have a try before bath. so me being me (lazy) left it a few weeks and then dd whipped her nappy off one day and just started using the potty/loo, no accidents and going by herself with out prompting, couldn't believe my luck:). IMO I recommend leaving the training 2/3 weeks later than when you think they may be ready!
