Potty training and poo!

Hi all

DS is 2y 2mo and has been potty training for about 10 days. He's totally dry and has been asking for the potty since about day 2/3 and has successfully managed a weekend away, travel etc so I'm really proud of him.

Problem is poo - the first 4 days he pooed on the potty and I was a big smug ;) He seemed to enjoy the praise and didn't have any quarms about doing it. Then he had one poo accident while we were away and since then has not pooed on the potty. He saves it for his nappy at sleep times (thankfully not in his pants again!) I have been giving him lots of fruit at breakfast to encourage him to do it during the morning but he always poos when he wakes from his nap/nighttime in his nappy. I alway say 'oh dear you've pooed in your nappy! Next time tell me and we'll get your potty ok?' And leave it at that. A few times I have suggested it during the day and he just shakes his head and carries on playing.

I'm worried it's become an issue for him - he knows its a big deal to me as he uses it as a way to avioud going to bed/get out of high chair by saying he wants to poo in the potty! Then he runs off.

He's obsessed with seeing his poo (I show him his nappy and say ooh look at that nice big poo, lets put him in the toilet) and he is obsessed with watching me poo! (TMI sorry!)

What is the next step for us, should I just let it go and wait for him to be ready? OR encourage him? What? I have some sparkly thomas stickers and told him he can have one when he poos in the potty. Stars worked well for the fist week of potty training.

Thanksin advance

have you tried the poo goes to pooland story? my dd was v reluctant to poo on the potty but after telling her this story we've had no problems so far, she talks about it to her teddies!

CreatureRetorts · 06/08/2013 19:05

I eased off for a bit on poo. Didn't say anything much. Then one day he started to poo and I offered a chocolate button of he did it on the potty. That was it - he pooed no problem. I do remember DH sitting with him and talking about pooing etc which def helped.

I'll try pooland but don't know how to get it. Am I right in thinking there are no pictures? If so not sure it will capture his attention! I saw pirate pete today but seems a bit pointless now he's got the peeing bit down to a T.

Thanks for replying

Poo goes to pooland helped us. My son has been trained since end of March and if needs a poo in his pants, he'll go but if at all possible he holds it in for his pullup overnight. I see it as the next stage and am not pushing him on it.

MrsGubbins · 06/08/2013 20:15

oh sorry! try here and type in pooland in the search criteria and it should bring up the PDF!

Got it, thanks! I almost feel though that even reading the story is making a bit of a thing of it. It's only been 2 weeks - maybe I should wait a while before talking it up again?

does he ask for a nappy so he can do a poo or just waits till naptime/bedtime? have you tried naptime without a nappy? I've only just started with DD and she's older at 2.8, I'm

sleepcrisis · 07/08/2013 08:21

Hi, no he doesn't ask he just waits. He actually only ever poos on waking, not before bed or during the night. It's actually how he used to be, he only started pooing during the day a month or so ago. Tbh I'm a bit scare of going nappy free for naps. They're usually dry after a nap (apart from the poo obv!) but he poos before calling for me and I can't face a poo clean up in the cot! He's eating so much fruit a the money, they're quite soft!!

actually most of his poos are in the morning, only once every few days does he poo after a nap. He only poos once a day.

posted too soon...

I've only just started with DD and she's older at 2.8, I printed out a few copies of the story and she's been colouring them whilst I've told the story, maybe just introduce it and don't mention pooing in the nappy or asking if he wants one etc and see if he mentions it?

good luck!

I'm going to try the story but maybe in a week or so. He loves his books but he likes to be really interested in the pictures too and I'm not sure this will really get his attention. But it's definitely worth a shot!
