Toddler tantrum in the rain!

My dd (2.7) just decided to stop riding her scooter and throw an almighty wobbler 1/2 a mile from home during torrential rain. She was screaming, sitting in puddles, kicking bushes... It took me 45 minutes to get home.

I put her in her room after stripping her out of her wet clothes and she has now fallen asleep on the sofa.

Completely due to tiredness and not wanting to go home from a play date she was enjoying but oh my god, how do other people cope when this happens!

I think if it hadn't been torrential I would have let her cry it out but she was sitting in puddles. I shouted at her when we got home and feel a bit Hmm about it as we don't ever shout. I shouted that she had made mummy very very cross.

I need to get fitter as it took all my strength to carry a thrashing toddler, scooter, helmet, bag etc

I usually tell ds he's tired and give him a cuddle and carry home. So he learns what tired means and feels safe when his emotions get out of control.

He's 3.10 and doesn't tantrum to get his way (doesn't work). He can now tell me when he's tired (and many other emotions too!)

She was telling me she was tired but I could not pick her up easily, kicking and screaming etc. Hmm

Oh OP that's so rotten. I once had ds to the dead weight full on tantrum by the side of a main road in the dark and wet while I was heavily pregnant, knackered and sick. And had his beat friend (who's generally lovely but boisterous and needs watching!) with us as well. All really because tired/hungry. I did the emotions nano stuff as well which has helped over the long term but that evening ranks as a very low point!! Have a glass of something nice and remember that tomorrow is another day and don't bear a grudge against her or you.

Ah, well it's done now!

Luckily I usually have a double pushchair with me as have a baby as well so chuck him in that if possible. maybe it's worth using a lightweight pushchair if you know there's a chance she might get tired. Use the pushchair for luggage etc and get her to walk. If she gets tired, stick her in with a snack and off you go.

Ah these things happen. Tired toddlers are hard work.

I don't think there is a magic solution.

I find crying in the kitchen whilst eating Nutella with my hands a spoon helps.

Other people do what you did! It does suck but you'll laugh about it when she's 25.

Thanks all Smile

Will definitely be taking the buggy next time. Silly thing is it caught me off guard as we usually go out scooting around the village for an hour in the evenings but this was a 10 minute trip!

She is usually scooting at the speed of light with me running behind her!

Ah well, we live and learn hey. I cannot risk her doing that again with me on my own, she was like a slippery snotty puddle covered octopus fighting for its life. Buggy for the foreseeable just in case.

I am laughing about it now I am dry and have Wine

I must have looked a state marching her down the road (she walked for 30 seconds at the end)
