Yep, remote controls more often than not

NotQuiteCockney · 12/06/2006 11:08

I think all our nice breakable stuff is in boxes in the other house or something.

And my biggest one is only 4, so not very skilled at getting into things.

Tortington · 12/06/2006 11:21

if its valuable to you - then move it. curiosity is the greatest learning facet of a child. there are some things kid have to be told straight up "no" but in general if its valuable to you - then dont leave it where they can touch it.

Cod · 12/06/2006 11:22

it isnt realy valuable its jut annoying
balls punctured
hoses broken ( imean hardly valuable)
putside lights smased by fotoballs etc etc

We brought a lovely little elephant ornament back from Portugal with us and put it on the top of our TV.

It was knocked off by DS's football this weekend and so now its trunk has come clean off. DP was fuming but at the end of day kids are kids.

KTeePee · 12/06/2006 17:30

And why do they never break the hideous things people give you as presents?

sottovoce · 12/06/2006 18:41

Dh is quite good at breaking things in our house Grin

stoppinattwo · 12/06/2006 18:42

They only break my heart Smile

only kidding

DD once cut one of my tops up so it would fit her Angry, she sellotaped it back up again tho Smile so that was ok

apronstrings · 12/06/2006 18:44

yes - we go through crockery in particular like its going out of fashion

geekgrrl · 12/06/2006 18:46

well, a few weeks ago ds and dd2 scratched my brand new, 5 day old car all over with pebbles ('Look Mama!' Draw car!').AngryAngry
The walls have been scribbled on. The video on the TV/video gave up long ago.
In fact I can think of far too many other things to list really. But the car was the worst thing by far. I just cried and cried ... my lovely shiny new car. :(

honeybunny · 12/06/2006 20:16

Its the back of remote controls that get broken in our house. There are 3 of them and none of them have the back on anymore, so its hunt the batteries every time you want to change channel. Paddling pools too, but I think that's the foxes..... they chew them if we leave them out. Dont think I can blame that on the kiddliwinks.

Cod · 12/06/2006 20:25

oh yes and hte pc always being knackered

OK, shoot me down in flames etc, but can I just ask, regarding things like cutting clothes/ scratching cars etc - when do they manage to do this? When my kids were that young they weren't left unsupervised long enough (except by DH of course, but that's a different thread Angry ) to get up to this stuff. And things like scissors were kept safely out of reach.

AdelaideS · 12/06/2006 20:30

Mine always leave dvd & video cases scattered around & then stand on them. WHY? just to be a few mm taller. They always, always stand on them and they crack and split (the cases, not the kids)

geekgrrl · 12/06/2006 20:39

legacy, it didn't take them long to do the car. :( My car was in the drive, which is part of the garden but not visible from the house. I let them play in the garden unsupervised (they can be out there for hours and I go out to check on them every 5-10 minutes - the garden is completely enclosed).
TBH it would have never occured to me that they would do this. Both mine and dh's cars are usually parked there and they've always ignored them.

spidermama · 12/06/2006 20:42

Virtually nothing I own is unbroken. All the TV and DVD remotes, radios, pens are half eaten, scissors lost, video cases broken. They leave no stone unturned when it comes to trashing everything I own. It drives me mad.

I've noticed that not all kids do this.

foxinsocks · 12/06/2006 20:48

our remote controls always get broken or they conveniently lose them and I spend hours looking for them (only ever realise they are lost once they are in bed!). Our phone is another fave of theirs to break and loads of keys on the keyboard stop working once they've had a go.

Feistybird · 12/06/2006 20:48

erm...ours don't DDs 3 and 5. They really don't. I can't think of the last thing of mine or Dps that they broke. If I see them near anything like sunglasses, I just screech 'Nooooo' very frighteningly. Works.

southeastastra · 12/06/2006 20:59

sons break each others toys mostly. though i am sick of my broom being unscrewed and used as a lightsabre.

Cod · 12/06/2006 20:59

uees we have had money in cd player in car, video is broken in one tv too

OP posts:
Miaou · 12/06/2006 21:09

I'm going to stick my head over the parapet and say my kids have never broken anything of mine, ever (ok dd1 dropped a plate once, but that's it). They've never cut my clothes, stuck money in video players, thrown stones, used my makeup, broken ornaments ...

please don't tell me it's because they're girls because my ds is now 10 months and starting to crawl ... argh Grin

stoppinattwo · 12/06/2006 21:55

Legacy, wouldnt dream of shooting you down in flames, my DD is very resourceful and also has an older brother who will comply without question and can access most areas in our house.

together they are dynamite Grin, she was gutted when she realised what she'd done and hence the sellotape to make it better.

I dont watch them all the time, generally I let them make their mistakes (isnt that how we learn?), there arnt many things in my house that cant be replaced, things like scissors and other sharp stuff is generally out of the way.
Oh yes and i dont like juice down the back of the telly or my PC as that would mean no more MN Sad

Legacy · 12/06/2006 22:00

Mmm - have to say, mine (6 & 3) haven't ever done stuff like this either. DS1 drew all over a table in felt tip when he was about 2, but that's about it.

I'm afraid we're pretty tough on the 'respecting property' thing. If they stand on videos/CDs etc then they get taken away for a period of time.
