Toddler and word play...is this usual?

My DS who is 2 and a half this week is a pretty verbal. Of late he's started to say lots of made up words instead of proper ones. When he greets people, he's always gone into an over-excitement mode and does lots of raspberries (which, in itself, is this odd?) and now starts saying lots of made up words.

When we do rhymes and songs, he often swaps words etc.

I love his imagination but just wanted to check other toddlers to do this? I don't hear it from his friends

My dd did that a lot too, so I would say normal.

bulletwithbutterflywings · 01/08/2013 19:53

Sounds normal. My DS likes to replace every second word in the sentence with 'pants' at the moment Hmm this has been going on a while...

catchafox · 01/08/2013 19:54

Really LOL - Bulletwithbutterflywings. That's my future too, I can see it.

My 2.3yo started doing a bit of this recently too :)

KnittedWaffle · 01/08/2013 20:16

My DS1 is nearly 2.5 and does this sort of thing. He also makes random sounds when he's talking to fast for his tongue to catch up (wonder if this is your DS's raspberries?)
He loves making up rhymes, especially if they have the word poo/bum/wee/toilet/vacuum cleaner in them Hmm

One of his gems: 'row, row, row the boat gently down the toilet, don't forget to wash your hands and flush the toilet too! Flush!'

I love their creativity at this age - your DS sounds ace! :)

bulletwithbutterflywings · 01/08/2013 20:16

It started when he started Preschool. The pants-ing I mean! Before that he just did the nonsense talk/ raspberries/ silly noises. He still does them all when he's excited little bugger he 4 in a couple of weeks Hmm

catchafox · 01/08/2013 21:04

Bullet, he sounds a lot like my DS. Sometimes I think he's overexcited or just doesn't know what to do so blows raspberries or is silly. I love it, but I hope it doesn't make him the silliest boy in his class as he progresses

He is ace Knitted. He really is.

DS (almost 3) has started making up words too - especially when excited, but also to sing along to little tunes.

"those weren't words DS" is currently one of the most common phrases in the house.

I don't know what's brought it on - he's actually a pretty good communicator now, I figured it was just another phase.

Jaffakake · 01/08/2013 22:29

My ds uses "moat" for water/milk/juice. Apparently my brother had a couple of made up words for things too. It must just be something we do as we learn.

I always say with my dd (2.5) ask a stupid question get a stupid answer. If someone says something like 'how are you?' She'll say a nonsense word or 'poo poo'. I like the word play it shows linguistic skill, a sence of humour, creativity and imagination. As long as they can use proper sentences too its a good thing IMO.

catchafox · 02/08/2013 13:13

Amiee, yes, I do agree - he's very good at sentences, so that doesn't concern me. He just likes messing around with words, and it does show he's creative and has a good sense of humour, for sure

Don't worry, DS2s new favourite nonsense phrase is "I can see a bum in the bumble bumble" he is 2.8. Ds1 used to call most things " a doof doof". I think they just like to play around with words, all part of the learning process. I agree with Amiee, as long as they are using proper words and sentences too, its not a problem.

Yonionekanobe · 03/08/2013 21:46

DD (2.5) is just coming through a phase of replacing the first letter of words with 'p' or 'h', even if words we know she can say. For example she will say 'hummy' instead of 'tummy', and 'pappy' instead of 'nappy'. I was worried she was regressing verbally but have been reassured that this word play is normal, and in fact an important part of grasping language.

piggybank · 03/08/2013 23:22

My ds loves word play and silly rhymes (that don't actually rhyme, lol). I love his creativity. knitted I love the row row row your boat! I am going to sing that to my ds as we are transitioning to the toilet and this is a fun hand washing/flushing song :-D

MiaSparrow · 04/08/2013 22:49

Yes! DD (2.5) has started doing this too. The other night we had: Upsydaisy went to town riding on a pinkypony, she put a feather in her cap and called it Iggle Piggle. (!) Whilst totally silly, I thought this was very clever of her. She also makes up verbs: Mummy why are you stooshing your hair like that, etc.
