2.9 DS seems to be going backwards

Hello

I really need some advise as I am becoming increasing worried about my DS

He has always been a bundle of energy an has a cracking personality, but just lately his concentration levels seem to be non existent
He used to sit with me for long periods learning letters, numbers ect he was always really interested in this but now it is a battle to keep him occupied for more than 2 minutes

Nursery have picked up on this too and we are working together to spend at least 4 10min sessions per day where he will sit down and do a task, maybe tracing letter or doing a jigsaw

He has also regressed with his potty training, although in the last few weeks it has been much better

But his speech also seems to be getting worse, it's almost like he has all the words and is trying to put them together but they all get jumbled up?

When he wants to concentrate on something, he will, he will play with trains and cars and read books, but is just so easily distracted

I don't think it's anything along the lines of ADHD because if I put the tv on as a treat he will sit and watch an entire film like nemo or monsters inc, and I took him to Micky mouse live last week and he sat for the whole hour

He goes to nursery 2 days per week,
When he returns from nursery I ask how his day has been and what he has been doing, who did he play with ect but he wont talk to me about anything he just gets frustrated

Any advise? Sorry it's long!

My advice would be to stop trying to teach him letters and numbers Confused

He's 2yo.

Let him play.

Why are you trying to teach him things if he's not interested? A couple of weeks ago 2.3 yo DS wanted to talk about letters all the time. Now he only wants to play with Playmobil. I think it's best to just let him play and if he's interested in letters another day we'll look at them again.

Sorry, the letters and numbers thing was just something he was always interested in.

I'm not fussed about letters and numbers, I'm more concerned about his concentration levels.
He has got home from nursery today and again I've asked him I he's ha a nice day, what's he been doing/playing with and he won't even engage in a conversation with me?
Is that normal?

I suppose or just got concerned about it since being called into nursery to discuss it Hmm

They also raised the point about hi speech, he was quite fluent but now it all just gets jumbled up ?

hi, i have no experience in this type of thing sorry, but i do have experience in having a worry about your little one's development and i know how upsetting that can be.

why not give your HV a call or speak to your GP about it and ask their advice - i''m sure they'll be more than happy to put your mind at rest, or let you know if they think it is something that could be a problem.

for what it's worth, i think he sounds like a normal little boy who maybe just can't be bothered at the moment....you know what these kiddies are like for turning us on our heads lol

Hope this helps, and i'm sure he's fine hun xx

It's always best to get professional help if kids are losing skills they previously had. Could he be upset about something? Is he going through a growth spurt?
Tv is a very poor test if concentration levels the screen changes every few seconds and it is amazingly stimulating. If you really think his speech has regressed I'd ask for an assessment by a speech and language therapist. It can't hurt and they can rule out anything serious.

I wouldn't worry about him not being able to tell you what he's done in nursery. That doesn't change, even when they're 10.

I wouldn't worry about the lack of interest in activities which require decent concentration spans. A child will concentrate on learning and developing in the way that their body and understanding are ready for. He was interested in learning about letter shapes, maybe he is ready to develop a different set of skills which involve more moving and experimenting.

The change in his speech would, however, be something I had checked out. I depends on the degree of change and that is hard to express on an internet forum but I'd definitely ask for him to be checked over.

Thank you!!
I think I got myself all worked up after nursery raising the subject.
I have phoned the HV and we have an appt in a few weeks time
It's probably nothing but would rather have it checked out and get some advise on what I can do to help
