2nd pfb question from me today. where do you let your babies crawl?

I'm just wondering when and where you let your babies crawl? If they have crawled on floor that people have walked on in shoes do you wash their hands right away?

I let ds crawl about at people's houses ( but not the bathroom) at home ( but also not the bathroom) at lplaygroup and at the library, if we are outside sat on grass or at the beach I let him crawl around but I put his dummy in so he doesn't eat sand/grass ( it hasn't occurred to him to take the dummy out, usually we try to save it for sleep time but it is great to stop ds eating inappropriate things) I wouldn't let him crawl in public places like a waiting room or a restaurant or on bathroom floors.

He puts his hands in his mouth all the time, I sometimes get the chance to whipe his hands down before he put them in his mouth but more often he has his hands in his mouth before I get the chance to clean them.

I am doing a flight then train journey alone with ds at the end of this month and I can't thinkof anywhere I would feelwas safe to let him crawl about, I'm not sure he will cope being held all day.

What do you do with your crawlers?

So long as the floor is reasonably clean, anywhere!
By 3rd DC my baby was crawling round the local park!
Relax
Enjoy your baby

literally anywhere. as long as there is not obv danger or dog poo or something!

MrsGyllenhaal · 31/07/2013 20:34

DS1, no where that wasn't sterilised and steam cleaned.

DS2, pretty much anywhere except broken glass!

LittleBearPad · 31/07/2013 20:37

Pretty much anywhere after a while. Think of it as improving his immune system.

TimothyClaypoleLover · 01/08/2013 16:35

Anywhere and everywhere. Their hands are being wiped so much anyway throughout the day that it isn't a problem. And babies/toddlers eat dirt and stuff they shouldn't, you can't stop them unless you don't let them crawl anywhere or constantly watch/follow them around. As LittleBearPad said, think of it as improving his immune system.

Just take a deep breath and stop fretting. You already know you are being PFB. A bit of dirt in the mouth is pretty unlikely to do any real harm - more likely to just boost the immune system and make for a healthier child in the long run. Assuming you wash the bathroom with bleach once a week or so even the bathroom floor is fine.

I tried to keep DD out of slurry pits, abattoirs and such like. Never let her do the "crawling on hot coals" thing.

Germs don't particularly live on floors, there's nothing really to feed the bacteria or water. They're much more likely to live in warm moist places with a food source - like cloths.

ChristineDaae · 01/08/2013 18:31

Anywhere. DD used to crawl round the garden. And eat the occasional dandelionBlush A few germs are good for them.

BeingMoreDog · 01/08/2013 19:32

anywhere and everywhere

JollyHolidayGiant · 01/08/2013 19:34

I agree with FredFred. I was rubbish at the PFB thing. DS crawled everywhere and put anything in his mouth.

ellesabe · 01/08/2013 19:39

My 8mo ate a dried leaf off the floor the other week.

Anywhere so long as I could watch he wasn't putting stuff in his mouth.
Exceptions - bus floors and train toilets, crowded places.

Dd loved crawling all round train vestibules last week - nice enclosed carpeted space. On a flight there may be a space at the back of the plane, but let them crawl in the waiting area. I believe in letting them get as much exercise as possible in the day - dd crawled up most of 5 flights of stairs to the Edinburgh Camera Obscura last week, just picked her up when someone came down.

Passmethecrisps · 01/08/2013 19:54

I am relieved by this! I was a bit concerned that I might be too relaxed!

My 8.5 month DD crawls everywhere. I hadn't thought of dummy in to stop grass eating but then she would pull it out.
