Does this sound like teething?

My DS is 3.5 months. He's had what looks like lower front tooth buds since about 5 weeks.

He's always been a big finger/hand sucker, but recently he is quite frantic with it. Particularly at night, in his sleep. He has been flailing around, kicking his legs up, rubbing at his face, head and ears and murmuring and crying in sleep. During the day he has been crying a lot more than usual, sounding as if he's in pain. He seemed like he had wind but no amount of winding or gripe water seemed to calm him. He's also dribbling a lot, which I know happens around his age anyway.

I want to help him feel better but obviously don't want to be giving him teething treatment and calpol if this isn't the problem.

Sounds like it. My parents swear by Bonjella on the gums, although have never done it myself. And if course, a teething ring to save his poor fingers.

Thanks. I put some Calgel on and it calmed him a bit. Can't use teething rings yet as he can't hold them. I've tried. A brief chew on Sophie the Giraffe but it's too big for him to use properly yet and falls out of his mouth unless I'm holding it for him.

My ds was the same at 4 months, unfortunately it was the start of teething...it's still going on 14 months later!

Your ds probably won't cut his first tooth for a fair few months yet but treat as he is teething. Cool teething rings, gel and teething powders. If really unsettled you can give pain relief.

It's not an easy time but it does tend to get better after the couple.

With regards to the dribbling, try a bandana type bib or dribble bib to avoid soaking t shirts and a rash under the chin.

I used to freeze slices of apple, banana etc for him to suck on and soothe his gums at the same time.

first couple

I've got what look like teething dummies from boots. My dd can't hold teething rings as shes only 11 weeks and I spotted these with the dummies. They have like a half circle with different ridges to chew, you can also put gel on them, you just pop them in their mouth like a dummy. Could be worth a try and for £2.50 it's not much to pay.

Thanks. I'll give them a go. Although he tends to push dummies out of his mouth with his tongue - not in a rejection way, just because that's what he does with his tongue!

These look good if they don't work www.gummeeglove.co.uk/

My dd pushes it out

Funghoul · 31/07/2013 15:18

Sorry on phone!
My dd pushes it out, she's forever sticking her tongue out, but some of it was the unusual shape I think, took her a while to get used to. She does give it a good chew now though before spott

Spitting it out!
Sorry!
