Top teeth first?? Early teething!

Ds is 4.5 months and has been showing signs of teething for a few weeks - excessive drooling, uncharacteristic (i thought it might have been the heat) crankiness, chewing everything. However, I thought it was quite normal for that to go on for months before any actual teeth arrive!

This morning I have spotted what I think is an actual tooth in his mouth! But weirdly it is at the top and to the side. I thought the usual order was bottom middle, top middle, then top sides? At the other side it looks like there is one about to push through to create a matching pair. The other weird thing is that the 'tooth' is at the front of his gum iykwim, rather than at the bottom of his gum facing downwards. Is that normal?

I can't think what else this could be but teeth coming. Anyone else had experience of early teeth and upper teeth first?

I have google but most images are of bottom teeth.

Dd got her first teeth through at 14 weeks, they were bottom two though. I guess they can come in any order, and at any time.

DD got her first teeth at 4 months, bottom two. It might be a mineral deposit, DD had one when she was born. I think it was called an Epstein pearl?

According to my dentist relative, the usual order is just the most common. Many kids do it out of order to a greater or lesser extent.

Top ones often do look like they are coming through the front at first. It's to do with where top teeth sit in the mouth. If you feel your teeth with your tongue, you actually have a lot more front tooth at the front IYSWIM. The back of your front teeth are partially covered by gum.

Yes Amanda that makes sense and was sort of what I was trying to explain to DH over the phone this afternoon (he's worried DS is getting tusks!). I guess another couple of days will tell!

My dd got the teeth either side of her middle teeth first at the top then the middle 2 and her bottom teeth then followed the same pattern

I have to admit I worried she didn't have any middle teeth but they all came through fine Smile

My DS's top teeth at the side came through first. Then middle bottom, then middle top. Still waiting for the side ones at the bottom.

Interesting that there's a 'usual' order..

Bottom 2 came though at 15 weeks and 17 weeks poor love it was an early unexpected hell.

All 4 of mine got first teeth at 4 months. Ds4 just had the 2 bottom middle come through together. Ours have all had bottom middle come first but then the pattern varied. As others said the pattern varies from child to child bit IME the incisors are the most painful to come through.
