TBH sounds like normal 5 week old to me. I would just nurse and cuddle. If you are BF offer your breast even if its just for comfort.Dummy?

sansouci · 09/06/2006 22:08

cuddle? if cuddled, then leave her for 20 minutes & then go & check on her. It will be agony but worth it in the end! If she's still crying, she could have wind...

helsi · 09/06/2006 22:08

yes using dummy but keeps spitting it out! lol

singing to him/her

musical toy

baby swing

one of those sling things

ride in the car

if all fail...start all over again with a bath, in desparation i i tried this and hey presto, i couldn't believe it

good luck

emkana · 09/06/2006 22:10

Don't leave her for 20 mins!!! Shock

I would say it's normal for a five week old - I would try offering the breast again, carry around, go for a walk, drive in the car...
something like that.

LaylaandSethsmum · 09/06/2006 22:11

You probably have to hold dummy in as too young to hold in by self.Crying can be par for the course i'm afraid when they are soo tiny!! Can you share the work with someone?

MeAndMyBoy · 09/06/2006 22:14

something we used to do for DS was hold his arms and legs to us as he used to thrash around when he got upset - but at that age have no control and then gently twist at the waist so a light fell across his eye sight - took a little while but the light/dark change would catch his attention and then he'd calm down.

Good luck I know it can be so frustrating. Hope LO calms down and falls asleep soon.

juuule · 09/06/2006 22:19

Swaddle and rythmically rock and hold close.
A 5-week old needs someone to comfort them in my view.

emkana · 09/06/2006 22:22

Sorry for the horrible picture, but have you tried carrying him/her around \link{http://www.baby-welten.de/img/inhalt/halten_flieger.jpg\like this?}

morningpaper · 09/06/2006 22:22

You are probably going to have to carry this baby around cuddling it for another few months

Better get used to it :)

AdelaideS · 09/06/2006 22:39

Aaah, Helsi...poor you. Has the crying stopped yet? No practical suggestions to add to all the excellent ideas, just to say ds was like this for a few weeks and then suddenly turned into a model baby, so don't despair!

sansouci · 09/06/2006 22:40

Yes, 5 weeks is too young to let them cry it out. Cuddle, rock, cuddle...

Ulysees · 09/06/2006 22:43

was going to suggest that emkana....was trying to work out how to describe the way of holding Smile

I used to do this and gently rock the baby.

katiebl · 09/06/2006 22:44

Used to walk my ds in pram at this age as it would calm him down. Or swaddling and cuddling worked really well on him.

KommandantColditz · 09/06/2006 23:11

go and put the washer on spin, stand next to it and rock.

If the baby is spitting the dummy a lot, but sucking furiously in between, try feeding again. you never kmow.

EmmaKB · 09/06/2006 23:41

Ds2 has been like this since he was born (is now 10 weeks) I used to settle him by swaddling, turning on the vacuum cleaner on or cuddling him close while he has his dummy. Put the dummy in and then turn her body towards yours so that you are keeping the dummy in with your body. Gently pat on her bum. Works for me. Even better when swaddled but maybe not in this hot weather we are having.

juuule · 09/06/2006 23:43

In the hot weather - just a vest and swaddle with cotton sheet.

Tortington · 09/06/2006 23:48

i used to do the washer thing - or the hoover

or stick em in water - mine always liked water.

AdelaideS · 10/06/2006 08:39

Hi Helsi,
Just wondering what sort of night you had in the end? How's babe this morning?

helsi · 10/06/2006 19:22

Thanks all - just kept offering bottle and cooled boiled water. She settled about 11pm and slept till 7am so can't complain.

Phew!

Twiglett · 11/06/2006 09:57

glad she calmed down

would suggest that you give her 'feeds' not water .. she's only 5 weeks old and the more 'food' she gets the better Smile
